The Key Populations Program within the Center for Public Health and Human Rights in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (JHSPH) is looking for a highly motivated Sr Research Program Coordinator II to oversee the implementation of ongoing research projects, focusing on the teams South Africa-based portfolio of projects. This includes an existing NIH R01 study focused on PrEP service delivery optimization across ten districts in three provinces of South Africa. The Senior Research Program Coordinator II will also be responsible for supporting with the launch of a newly funded NIH R34 study based in Cape Town leveraging a partial preference trial design for next generation HIV treatment modalities. Additional studies may fall under the candidates purview as new funding becomes available.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- The Sr. Research Program Coordinator II will be responsible for liaising across the team, working with students and with JHU faculty and staff.
- Develop project management plans and timelines with key milestones, proposals, and standard operating procedures.
- Monitor adherence to these plans to ensure milestones and deliverables are met by closely coordinating multiple faculty members from Johns Hopkins as well as implementing partners.
- Manage multiple priorities, short-term and long-term deadlines concurrently, including managing the scientific and administrative design and implementation of projects.
- Draft and prepare annual and quarterly program reports and work plans for, but not limited to, ethics committees and funders.
- Draft applications and annual renewals when applicable for submission to regulatory groups, including JHU and local IRBs, Provincial Research Ethics Committees, Clinicaltrials.gov, South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), and Data Safety and Monitoring Boards (DSMB).
- Serve as a liaison with JHSPH and external funders, partners, regulatory bodies, and key stakeholders.
- Provide high quality management and coordination of projects through a high level of organization, accuracy, interpersonal, and communication skills sensitive to the needs of project sponsors, host institutions, and partner organizations.
- Proactively build relationships with the project team, contractors, and other related personnel and partners.
- Develop research plans and study instruments for submission to the Johns Hopkins University IRB office and local country offices in collaboration with team members
- Monitor IRB applications and manage IRB-related study communication.
- Develop and disseminate standard operating procedures and operations manuals to facilitate implementation of study activities.
- Work with PI to recruit and interview project interns, research assistants, and students
- Serve as primary supervisor/mentor for project interns, research assistants, and graduate students including leading training and monitoring of these team members. Support graduate students completing in-country field placements and provide mentorship and guidance on student thesis/capstone development and analyses.
- Serve as primary supervisor for short-term staff hired to work on projects the candidate will coordinate. This includes setting up short-term hire positions, reviewing and approving timesheets, and meeting regularly with staff to set goals and expectations for work and deliverables during their short-term positions.
- Develop and oversee research and program budgets, including budget projections and monthly invoicing; monitor budget expenditures to ensure spending is in-line with study activities and available funds.
- Collaborate with financial staff in the preparation and tracking of activity budgets and subcontracts.
- Develop, manage, and maintain REDCap databases and other electronic database systems.
- Oversee data entry and quality control in REDCap; communicate with in-country teams and research assistants to ensure errors are corrected in a timely manner.
- Identify and implement improvements to project efficiency (better and faster ways to accomplish tasks, as well as opportunities for reducing costs).
- Write or contribute to conference abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts through quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis and writing, contribute text, conduct literature review, format references, prepare paper for submission and submit.
- Work closely with local study coordinators from implementing organizations to manage relationships with local departments of health, district councils, and other local NGOs to ensure awareness and buy-in to research activities to ensure study success.
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of study data. Lead writing of abstracts and manuscripts for publication and present results at relevant conferences.
- Write reports, fact sheets; contribute to conference abstracts and peer-reviewed manuscripts developed by students and other team members; contribute text, conduct literature review, format references, prepare papers for submission and submit.
- Draft interim and final reports for Data Safety and Monitoring Board review, including running quantitative analyses to assess study progress and outcomes and documenting safety concerns to ensure trial compliance with DSMB standards.
- Lead analyses to inform interim and final study results and develop content for dissemination events, including internal presentations to implementing partners as well as external events with community advisory groups, local departments of health (district, provincial, and national level), in-country CDC/PEPFAR partners, and relevant NGO stakeholders.
- Lead calls with collaborators including setting agendas, taking notes, and assigning action items to ensure study goals and deliverables are met.
- Assist with other projects as requested.
- Participate in and/or lead meetings with guests and stakeholders.
- Organize project meetings, conferences, seminars, and events.
- Draft content for and regularly update a description of the project on the Center website.
- Project management frequently requires international travel to the study sites to conduct training, study oversight and support dissemination activities. When safe to travel, it is assumed that the person in this position will be willing and capable of travel.
- Lead training sessions with study interns, graduate students, and research assistants to familiarize them with the study design and objectives, data collection tools and study database, data analysis methods.
- Develop content for and lead trainings with local data collectors, research assistants, and other study staff on topics including human subjects research and good clinical practice, informed consent, study population sensitization, data collection tools, participant recruitment, and data management.
- Support grant development and submissions in response to requests for proposal from federal and international funding mechanisms. This includes leading the drafting of prime and sub-contract budgets, non-scientific documents (human subjects materials, compliance documents, letters of support), contributing to scientific documents, and managing communications with JHSPH faculty and external collaborators to ensure grant development timelines and submission deadlines are met.
- Liaise with finance and grants & contracts teams at JHU and implementing partner organizations to coordinate post-award activities, including preparation and submission of Just-in-Time requests, set-up of budget numbers and sub-award contracts and budgets.
- Work with PI and sub-contractors to develop and submit annual sub-contract modifications including budgets in-line with anticipated study activities and associated expenses.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, including timely responsiveness.
- Demonstrated self-management with the ability to work on multiple tasks with short and/or competing deadlines.
- Comfort working with a diverse team on projects related to human rights, historically marginalized populations, and sexual and gender-diverse communities.
- Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
- Five years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Master's Degree in Social and Behavioral Interventions, Epidemiology, or other related field.
- Prior collaborative research experience.
- Experience working and collaborating with Health Departments, Ministries of Health, governmental health agencies, and/or program evaluation and data management is an asset.
- Experience in scientific computing/programming and STATA, R or other statistical software is an asset.
- Experience working with key populations and other marginalized groups.
- Familiarity with and experience managing complex trial designs, including cluster randomized trials, SMART, and partially randomized patient preference trials.
- Qualitative analysis experience.

Starting Salary Range: $46,560-$64,100-$81,650 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
