We are seeking a Research Assistant to support a project titled Rendering the prevalence and toll of medical racism understandable to the public and mapping a path forward to heal medicine of its racist history.
The project's objectives are as follows: 1) a review of the literature on contemporary and historical experience on Black birthing people in the Black Atlantic; 2) an examination of successful practices that birth workers have with Black birthing people; 3) dissemination of the research finding to the general public in podcast format as well as traditional academic formats; and 4) development of a narrative non-fiction book that makes visible to the general public the toll of medical racism on Black birthing people and the efforts to transform these practices.
An advisory group will guide the project. The research assistant will be part of a small team led by Dr. Kaytura Felix, a distinguished scholar, who focuses on health justice. The project is housed within the Department of Health Policy and Management within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Administrative
- Attends and takes notes during regular advisory group and team meetings.
- Assists in the preparation and submission of IRB applications and submit investigator approved communications to the IRB through a web-based program.
- Collaborates with community-based partners to organize the administration of study. procedures; handle all related procedures, e.g. participant recruitment, enrollment, scheduling, data forms, and mailings; discussion group schedules.
- Assists in the recruitment, screening, and consent of participants according to inclusion and exclusion criteria.
- Assists in the development and delivery of study materials and documents such as recruitment flyers, consent forms, interview guides, etc..
- Assists in the modification of discussion group guide as appropriate.
- Assists with communication and dissemination efforts, including website and newsletter maintenance and development.
Research
- Conducts literature reviews, including works of scholarship, on the history of Black birthing experiences in the Black Atlantic using online social science databases
- Summarizes relevant studies and works of scholarship and presents in various formats including oral and written reports.
- Conduct discussion groups.
- Conduct qualitative (thematic) analysis for themes.
- Summarize discussion groups and synthesis findings into a report.
- Assists in the development of tables and figures for reports and manuscripts.
- Prepares and edits presentations, slides, manuscripts and reports as requested
- Prepares reports for funders.
- Learns and uses programs or technologies relevant to research projects or related tasks.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have a highly developed understanding of racial equity and structural racism
- Must be experienced in conducting archival research related to the Black Atlantic
- Must have demonstrated excellent qualitative research skills including qualitative data analysis and focus group moderation skills
- Must be able to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks;
- Must have strong organizational skills, initiative, leadership skills, attention to detail, be able to take direction, and work independently and as part of a team (teams of researchers and with diverse subject populations in particular).
- Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; MS Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive,
- Ability to analyze and interpret data in a social science and public health context.
- Proven excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.
- Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Travel supported will be provided.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
- Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree is preferred.
- Five or more years of related experience.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
