Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through (a) technology licensing, (b) the development of corporate research collaborations and (c) venture creation. JHTV serves as a business advisor to investigators at all nine schools of the university whose research has commercial potential and provides a set of specific resources to aid them in applying world-class science to the market in industries ranging from biotech to industrial manufacturing and energy. We also run specialized programs for student entrepreneurs and social impact ventures, aiming to activate the talent across campus and the Baltimore community and turn ideas into action. We are seeking an Intellectual Property Analyst to support technology licensing activities by performing assessments of new technologies and assisting Intellectual Property Managers in planning the department's management of these technologies. The Intellectual Property Analyst, in the course of normal assignments, will learn about all of the various components of Intellectual Property Management.
This position reports to the Director, Intellectual Property Management, a Sr. Intellectual Property Manger, or designee.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Reviews and understands technologies disclosed to JHTV.
- Analyzes elements of patentability for inventions reported to JHTV to assist in making strategy decisions.
- Identifies obligations incurred through funding sources, material transfer agreements and other agreements that may impact the ability of JHTV to protect Intellectual Property of the technology.
- Through on-the-job training, develops a working knowledge of the technology IP and commercialization process.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must have a science background to understand complex technologies.
- Must work as a team member with other JHTV staff.
- Must be very detail oriented and highly organized.
- Very resourceful in terms of Internet searching.
- Ability to multi-task under deadline pressure
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required in Physical Sciences, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or Biology.
Preferred Qualifications
- U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
- Advanced degree preferred, but not required, in a related science or engineering or an MBA with experience in biotechnology fields.
- Experience in a technology research laboratory or in a related business desirable.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
