Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins' focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a onsite work arrangement with an onsite presence of 5 days per week.
Reporting to the Director of Blue Jays Unlimited, this position focuses on planning, executing and monitoring continuous fundraising and engagement activities for alumni, parents and friends who are primarily affiliated with the Department of Athletics; specifically, personal solicitations, and email and phone solicitation programs. This position is responsible for reaching and exceeding leadership annual giving targets to achieve the strategic goal of broadening and strengthening the base of constituent support and engagement with Johns Hopkins University alumni, parents and friends to include all constituents, both donors and prospects that may be affiliated with the Department of Athletics. The Associate Director will collaborate with the development staffs in Central Services, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and within other collegial relationships to increase overall leadership annual giving activity. This position also increases constituent engagement with the University by partnering with the Blue Jays Unlimited Board of Advisors.
The primary areas of focus for the Associate Director are as follows:
Fundraising:
- Plan, implement and manage a primary portfolio of up to 200 prospects with leadership annual giving capacity ($1,000 - $25,000).
- Responsible for up to 120 visits per year and will implement appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies in accordance with institutional standards.
- Solicit gifts in support of the Department of Athletics and Recreation including capital, scholarship, endowment and annual fund needs.
- Represent the case for support of Homewood student life to a wide-ranging constituency of alumni, parents, and friends with interest in Athletics and Recreation.
- Prepare proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors.
- Participate in all regularly scheduled development office annual/major gift staff meetings and institutional development training sessions.
- Meet bi-weekly with the Director of Blue Jays Unlimited.
- Attend bi-weekly Blue Jays Unlimited team meetings
- Communicates and meets weekly with the Athletics Department coaches and staff as appropriate and at the request of the Director of Athletics & Recreation.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of all procedures of Johns Hopkins development & Alumni Relations.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and prospect management with institutional Development staff and the Director of Athletics & Recreation.
- Travel and attend BJU events with the intent to engage alumni and parent prospects and steward current donors.
Volunteer Coordination:
- Maintain current lists of members for the Blue Jays Unlimited Board of Advisors. Communicate regularly with the Director of Blue Jays Unlimited and other development staff to cultivate new names for consideration for membership with this group, with the intention of increasing board members engagement and giving through their time on the board.
- Oversee five committees managed by the Board of Advisors. Work with each board member to ensure that they are serving on at least on committee to support board member engagement. Partner with each committee chair to ensure that groups are meeting regularly. Work with the board leadership to leverage committees to develop a volunteer pipeline and identify future board members
- Work with each board member to solicit annual board dues by the end of the fiscal year. Partner with the Board Chair to leverage board terms to educate each board member on the importance of giving. Create a comprehensive strategy to increase giving of each board member and encourage peer to peer solicitations.
Departmental Goals & Communication:
- Knows the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies and procedures for the Homewood Schools and the Department of Athletics & Recreation as well as maintaining familiarity with other departments within the Schools.
- Is sensitive to the inter-relationship of both people and functions within the departments.
- Demonstrates a high level of professionalism and a solid work ethic.
- On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
- Exercise a superior level of customer service.
- Frequently exchanges non-routine information using tact, confidentiality and persuasion as appropriate requiring strong oral and written communication skills. Often maximizes these skills to express, both orally and in writing, the mission of the University and the fundraising goals of the campus, especially as they relate to the Department of Athletics & Recreation.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three years related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five years of fund-raising experience required, preferably in a higher education environment.
- Proficiency in the use of web-based applications, email usage, as well as Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment; proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Must be a highly motivated, goal oriented, self-starter, and have excellent written, oral communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to work a flex schedule including nights and weekends as required.
- Experience in personal solicitations as well as working directly with large groups of volunteers are preferred.
- Experience in a higher education environment preferred for those who have made their mark in other fields that draw on the same core competencies.
- Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols and programs as well as any previous experience with Salesforce are highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
- The position requires someone who can assist with set-up and breakdown of tailgate athletic events. It requires carrying supplies, setting up tents, and moving items across campus and the ability to lift 25 pounds.
