General Description
The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) invites applications for a tenure track associate professor or a tenure-eligible full professor with expertise in the area of risk sciences and environmental health policy to be named the Jacob I. and Irene B. Fabrikant Chair in Health, Risk, and Society. The chair was established in 2000 by Irene B. Fabrikant in memory of her husband, Jacob I Fabrikant, who was a pioneer in environmental radiology.
The Department is seeking to expand the scope of expertise in risk sciences and environmental health policy. Candidates for the endowed chair should have a Ph.D. or comparable degree with expertise in, but not limited to, environmental policy, risk assessment, cumulative impacts, environmental justice, risk management and communication, and decision sciences. There is no limit on the topics that these methods are applied to; however, there is growing interest in the department related to climate, urban health, transportation, and health equity. Candidates for the endowed chair must have an established track record of externally funded research and be able to thrive in a research-intensive environment. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach within the Department of Health Policy and Management.
Qualifications
The Chair holder is also expected to assume a leadership role with the Risk Sciences and Public Policy Institute of the Bloomberg School, which is dedicated to the protection of public health through research, education, policy, and practice in the risk sciences. Central to the Institute is a commitment to providing scientists and decision-makers with the tools necessary to ensure that environmental and other regulatory health policies (e.g., food, tobacco control, drugs) result in improved public health, and a demonstrated commitment to graduate-level advising, mentoring, and teaching. Thus, the faculty is expected to contribute to the teaching and educational mission of the department and the Institute.
This is an exciting time to join HPM and the BSPH. A new chair, Dr. Keshia Pollack Porter, began in February 2022, and she has a bold vision regarding scholarship, education, practice, and policy impact. Under her leadership, the Department has reaffirmed its committed to advancing inclusion, diversity, anti-racism, and equity (IDARE) in scholarship, education, practice, and the department's culture.
