The Campus Operations and Facilities Department at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School is seeking a Facilities Supervisor who will provide hands on direct supervision and guidance over facility duties as required for the daily operation, scheduled events, and activities at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. We are dedicated to providing effective support by ensuring safety and comfort and upholding the dignity and worth of our students, faculty, and staff while evolving with the exponential growth of the school.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Performance Management 50%

  • Responsible for supervising contracted Facilities staff and working with them on the floors.
  • Assist with personnel management, including interviewing prospective staff, disciplining employees and upholding contractual and university personnel guidelines.
  • Train new employees one-on-one or in group settings using a training checklist.
  • Responsible for achieving excellent results in both routine and project work by holding staff accountable for performance.
  • Foster a work environment of inclusiveness, respect and promote good employee morale.


Facilities Operations Duties 50%

  • Perform frequent inspections of academic and non-academic spaces, including but not limited to: offices, libraries, classrooms, restrooms, common areas and entryways.
  • Serves as point of contact for all facility related matters.
  • Proficient in general maintenance in buildings including patching, painting, basic drywall repair, installation, etc.
  • Participate in procurement of all equipment, parts and supplies required to maintain facility.
  • Provides oversight and guidelines for standards in daily facility cleaning protocols and disinfecting.
  • Identify and report maintenance problems at campus center using web-based system.
  • Work closely with department leadership to obtain proposals from outside contractors and review invoices for all services rendered.
  • Manage all work of outside facilities contractors working in the Carey Business School space.
  • Assist the Director and Associate Director of Campus Operations in developing, implementing and maintaining an efficient corrective and preventative maintenance program for the Carey Business School.

  • General knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Carey Business School organizational structure.
  • Must be highly service oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to draft basic original correspondence and emails; experience with electronic communications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and visitors.
  • Ability to balance competing priorities.
  • Ability to work in a deadline- driven organization.
  • Flexible and ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities and circumstances.
  • Ability to make work related decisions without immediate supervision.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as stooping, bending, reaching and carrying items.
  • Must be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles as well as approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Physical ability to lift 20-25 pounds intermittingly is required.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as required for special functions.
  • Must be available to respond to off-hour emergencies as needed.
  • Required to maintain a professional image at all times and dress business casual.
  • Required to wear safety equipment and clothing when appropriate and/or required.


Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as stooping, bending, reaching and carrying items.
  • Must be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles as well as approved cleaning chemicals.
  • Physical ability to lift 20-25 pounds intermittingly is required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Three years progressively responsible experience required including; facility operations, hospitality, or maintenance.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. 


Preferred Qualifications
  • Trade School Graduate (Certification in carpentry a plus, not required).
  • Five (5) or more years of prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience with basic computer skills (email, MS Office)
  • Experience in a professional setting or academic environment is a plus.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
