We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician Training and Compliance Coordinator who will be responsible for coordinating clinical compliance initiatives such as Environmental Rounds, and creation of NIPOs. Serves as the primary point of contact for Wilmer staff members and external entities regarding clinical compliance questions/concerns. Serves as the lead ophthalmic technician in the Ophthalmic Technician Float Pool. Assists the Ophthalmic clinical Supervisor with hiring, training, scheduling and on-going development of the Float Tech Pool. Provides Administrative support to the program. Additionally, serves as an Ophthalmic Technician as necessary.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Designated Compliance/Environmental Rounds Coordinator
- Ensure Environmental Rounds and The Joint Commission (TJC) Readiness.
- Promote culture of compliance with Federal, State and local regulations through actions as verbal and written communications.
- Represent Wilmer at Environmental Rounds of each clinical location on the East Baltimore campus and all satellite locations with Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) employees every 6 months, TJC every 3 years, and ad hoc Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) surveys.

- Identify opportunities for compliance improvement in conjunction with the clinical management team and assists clinical managers and clinic staff with compliance, including developing reference tools for staff.
- Maintain records of Environmental Rounds and their results. Follow up with clinical leadership. Research policy and gain clarification where necessary.
- Maintain records of monthly and quarterly emergency Response and Fire Safety staff interviews.
- Absorb feedback and communicate recommendations with management and providers. Takes ownership of these recommendations and follow through with feedback and regular intervals.
- Help with all clinics be prepared for any and all audit at all times.
- Perform Ambulatory Tracers monthly and enters into V-survey.
- Attend weekly ACL (Ambulatory Clinical Leadership) and monthly regulatory Compliance Committee meetings and report pertinent information for Assistant Clinical Administrator and Clinic Managers.
- Serve as point of contact for Wilmer staff regarding Environmental Rounds and compliant questions.
- Serve as point of contact for Environmental Rounds, Regulatory Compliance and HEIC staff regarding ophthalmic clinical practices.
- Serve as liaison between compliance staff and clinical staff to verify policy for recommendations given.
- Non-prescriber Initiated Patient Orders (NIPOs):
- CMS audits for technician's operations within scope of practice and with orders by physician are covered by NIPOs.
- Research individual Wilmer divisions practices and develop draft for clinic manager.
- Follow up with clinic managers and division chiefs as necessary.
- Present to Chair of Pharmacy + Therapeutics Committee and to Medical Care Evaluation Committee for approval.
- Perform NIPO use audits monthly and enter results into V-survey.
- Collaborate with IT team to explain clinical ramifications of EMR modifications.
Serve as the lead Ophthalmic Technician
- Train new Ophthalmic Technicians
- Serve as the backup manager in absence of the Ophthalmic clinical Supervisor.
- Serve as the primary source for day-to-day questions/issues of other Ophthalmic technicians in the division.
- Provide input into performance reviews and will advise the Ophthalmic Clinical Supervisor of any employee issues that need to be escalated.
- Scheduled as many as 20 float technicians with varying skills and experience across all Wilmer divisions and satellite locations per requests from divisions.
- Keep record of requests, fulfillments and denials for monthly billing spreadsheet to clinical managers and finance.
- Enter SAP reimbursements for float technician travel expenses and Wilmer technician travel awards.
- Support Ophthalmic Clinical Supervisor with planning and execution of annual Technician Skill Evaluations and technician education.
Duties of an Ophthalmic Technician as Needed

Basic skills & lensometry
- Measure visual acuity at distance and near utilizing test appropriate for age and education, and records accurately.
- Perform pinhole testing when indicated.
- Perform and record contrast sensitivity.
- Perform Ishihara or HRR color vision testing.
- Accurately measure and record current lend power with lensometer.
- Perform and record Ex ophthalmometry.
- Perform and record Amsler grid.
- Perform and record Schirmer testing.
- Evaluate pupillary reactions, including afferent pupillary defect.
- Estimate anterior chamber depth.
- Able to properly operate common non-automated and automated ophthalmic equipment including, but not limited to: IOL master, bright field acuity testing (BAT), potential acuity meter (PAM), auto refractor, corneal pachymetry, Humphrey Visual Field, Goldman Visual Field, OCT, and Lenstar.
Patient Services
- Apply proper ocular dressing and shields.
- Follow divisional protocols for eye drop instillation, including cycloplegics and topical anesthetics.
- Properly instill eye drops.
- Label newly opened bottles with correct expiration date.
- Understand the indications/contradictions for use in dilation.
- Measure interpapillary distances, evaluate spectacle fit.
- Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients.
- Adhere to regulations regarding drug samples and drug sample logs.
Basic Tonometry
- Preform accurate Goldmann Applanation tonometry and properly disinfect the tonometer.
- Preform accurate tono-pen tonometry and properly disinfect the tonometer.
- Perform accurate i-Care tonometry.
- Understand the principals of scleral rigidity and the factors that alter intraocular pressure.
Instrument maintenance
- Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment.
- Stock examination rooms in assigned area and ensure medication expiration dates are current.
- Disinfect and maintain examination rooms.
- Assist physician chair side as a scribe. Must complete training and become proficient in software such as EPIC, POE, TAP, Forum and Oculab.
General Medication Knowledge
- Must maintain CPR certification.
- Understand basic ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocular emergencies.
- Understand and practice the fundamentals of microbial control.
- Must complete currently required JHMI courses such as,
- Self-learning educational packets
- HIPAA regulations
- Conflict of interest
- Complete Annual review paperwork in timely manner.
Possible additional duties and responsibilities
- Surgical assisting with minor outpatient procedures
- Basic instrument care, inventory and cleaning/stocking of room
- Sterilization
- Stitch removal
- Perform basic slit lamp evaluation.
- Measure axial length with A-scan biometry
- Perform protocol Refractometry or other testing for clinical trials.
- Other duties that may be assigned (back-office support, medical records, coordination).
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Asst (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification also required.
- Five years progressively responsible related experience.
