The Sr. Systems Engineer position performs an important role as part of the IT operations team for the Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) department of Johns Hopkins University. This requires an individual who has experience building mission-critical IT systems, has a broad range of technical expertise, and can work effectively with limited oversight.
In accordance with institutional policies and standards, responsible for administration, configuration, scripting, maintenance, performance, implementation, security and support of various departmental and components of enterprise-wide platforms, including the installation and testing of new software, operating systems, related utilities/services, and hardware products as well as the integration of new products and /or software release upgrades into the current environment. Conducts systems performance evaluations, monitoring, patch management, and security evaluations. Analyzes user needs in various computer environments (including but not limited to the mainframe, Windows, and mid-range) and makes recommendations for products and services that meet those needs. Ensures that all systems environments are maintained in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Under limited guidance, responsible for the full life-cycle of small to medium-sized moderately complex projects. Small and medium projects typically are applications/systems with 21-500 concurrent users requiring uptime commensurate with divisional/entity, research, education, or business systems. Impacts of outages will cause disruption such as the implementation of downtime procedures and disruption of business/education/research operations. Disruptions may be mitigated by manual workarounds and/or can await recovery.
- Build, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot Red Hat and Windows servers (approximately 100)
- Install, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot server applications, including Drupal, Apache, Red Hat Directory Server (LDAP), Jira, and Talend
- Build and maintain servers and services in Microsoft Azure
- Help to administer and troubleshoot a complex Salesforce environment (including Ascend, a third-party Salesforce application for university fundraising)
- Configure and monitor system alerts (Nagios, Splunk)
- Troubleshoot system issues and emergencies
- Work with the development team to manage code and code deployments
- Automate system processes with scripting (Bash, Powershell, Python)
- Maintain backup procedures and perform disaster recovery
- Create and maintain system documentation
- Administer users, permissions, and access for servers, databases, and applications
- Participate in the research and design of IT solutions to accomplish business objectives

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Five years related experience (Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experience. Significant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience.).
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
- Red Hat Certified System Administrator
- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer
- Experience with Salesforce
- Experience with database administration and SQL
- Experience with web server applications, such as Apache and IIS
- Experience with Microsoft Azure or other cloud platforms
- Experience with code management and deployment
- Experience with email marketing tools

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
