The Office of General Counsel has an immediate opening for a paralegal with relevant experience in reviewing contracts, maintaining corporate governance documents, providing litigation support, and conducting basic legal research. The paralegal is expected to work with the attorneys in the office and university clients on a broad range of matters impacting the university and its academic medical center, including, but not limited to, drafting and reviewing a variety of contracts related to healthcare law, compliance, employment law, experience in responding to discovery requests, including subpoenas and real estate. The paralegal will work primarily in the Healthcare & Research practice group, but will also support the Litigation & Contested Matters and Business Transactions & Commercial Matters practice group based on need and interest.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Draft and review contracts and other legal documents.
- Support clients through legal contracting processes, negotiations, and document management.
- Record and maintain records of meetings and compliance reports.
- Maintain databases of relevant documents and information as applicable.
- Assist with the maintenance of a forms library.
- Gather information and assist with responses to subpoenas; collect and manage case documents and exhibits to pleadings; assist the attorneys in the office with preparation of and responses to discovery requests; and draft routine correspondence.
- Provide assistance with case settlements.
- Research matters related to healthcare, sponsored research, employment, higher education in general, and other related matters.
- Draft memoranda, chronologies and other analyses, releases, and other documents as needed and directed by the attorneys in the office.
- Assist with engagement letters and conflict of interest waiver agreements.
- Experience in responding to discovery requests, including subpoenas
- Maintain online legal research service vendor registrations and contracts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies from an accredited institution and/or degree in Business Administration or related field.
- Five years of paralegal experience of progressively increasing responsibility are required.
- Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula, noted below.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in drafting, reviewing, and proofreading contracts and other legal documents.
- Experience with civil procedure, particularly in Maryland state and federal courts.
- Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, in a fast-paced environment, to handle multiple complex tasks, and to prioritize competing deadlines generated by multiple constituencies.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and collegially, orally and in writing, with JHU personnel at all levels of education, skill, and responsibility, as well as with outside counsel.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact.
- Appropriate self-awareness, including when to escalate matters.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), Adobe, WordPress, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and other relevant computer software.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
