The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant who will work under the direction of the Sr. Research Program Supervisor and will primarily oversee day-to-day data collection for research studies, in support of a PI, postdoc, research or administrative staff. Work consists of running and writing both standard and non-standard reports and analyzing routine data.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with sponsors on study design and program deliverables based on patient population and staff resources.
  • Train new staff members on relevant study protocols.
  • Set-up standard operating procedures for studies and clinical programs.
  • Create electronic data collection tools to meet requirements of study design and protocols (e.g. REDCap and Qualtrics).
  • Participate in many aspects of publications/manuscripts including literature searches, data set preparation, data validation, implementation of analytic plans, report generation, and preparation of written and oral presentations.
  • Meet regularly with Sr. Research Program Supervisor and/or team leader to review data accuracy, shift reports, and overall study progress.
  • Assist in preparation of IRB protocols and related documents.
  • Prepare for and participate in audits and monitoring of studies.
  • Prepare mandatory reports and documents/protocols.
  • Participate in weekly research group meetings; schedule meetings; create agendas; complete minutes.
  • Maintain paper and computerized research files.
  • Generate and summarize data into reports to share with PI and Research Program Manager, including assisting with coding, cleaning and management of data.
  • Clean data using computer software to ensure accuracy in preparation of tables.
  • Enter data into a computer database.
  • Perform data collection.
  • Schedule follow-up visits.
  • Collect patient specimens (e.g., blood draws, urine, or saliva) and other patient data from a variety of sources.
  • Interview patients.
  • Verify patient eligibility for studies.
  • Recruit research participants.
  • Interact with clinicians and other gatekeepers to access the patient population.
  • Adhere to all protocol requirements to ensure validity of clinical research data.
  • Run routine and ad hoc reports from databases.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must be comfortable collecting saliva, urine, or blood samples from patients.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, mathematical and statistical tools, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Independent and self-motivated.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines and within a variety of cultures.
  • Work Schedule/Hours:  This position will be working up to 19 hours a week. Must be available to work 6-8 hour shifts at a time, between the hours of 8:00 am and midnight, Saturdays and Sundays. Must be flexible and available to work evenings.




Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a registered Phlebotomist by a nationally recognized agency is preferred (e.g., National Center for Competency Testing, American Medical Technologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, National Phlebotomy Association).
