The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Specialist who will work in a stem cell lab in support of cutting-edge human stem cell work in the area of neurodegeneration. The successful candidate will be performing routine stem cell work and following protocols under close supervision. Will work with all members of the lab and will assist as needed in aseptic cell culture techniques, histology and various additional biochemical techniques. General day-to-day laboratory maintenance and general lab upkeep are also required. Will work under Biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3. Regularly and routinely responsible for administrative and scientific activities of both the Stem Cell Core and the research labs of Dr. Maragakis. This includes project development, invoice payments, reimbursements, service contract procurement and payment, equipment maintenance, animal surgery suite management, budgeting, manuscript compos. Oversee data collection on multifaceted projects relative to ALS relating to both stem cells technologies as well as in vivo animal surgeries, behavior and breeding. Analyze data utilizing statistical methods data analysis and assist with personnel management, including new-hire training and on-boarding as needed
As a member of the lab team, you are regularly sought out for help and advice, regarding animal surgery, behavior, perfusion and tissue collection (including tissue processing and storage), animal breeding (mouse and rat), CMAPs (compound muscle action potentials), histology (tissue and cell), microscopy, statistical and data analysis and cryotoming, as well as with ordering (specialty quotes, the use of ANPOs, LVPOs, and ECPOs), reimbursements and invoice payments. Assist others in order to help them better understand and master these skills whenever possible. Liaise with other labs in order to cooperatively work within our shared laboratory environment.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Follow established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include Stem cell line maintenance and expansion using aseptic technique.
- Perform additional laboratory experiments such as molecular analyses following established protocols as needed.
- Meet regularly with designated laboratory staff to review recent data, troubleshoot current experiments, review new experimental protocols and prioritize new experiments.
- Demonstrate independent judgement, organization, curiosity, problem solving, resourcefulness, and flexibility.
- Time flexibility for working hours required to accommodate human stem cells.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Experience with human iPSC's is helpful.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Aseptic cell culture of mammalian cells require; human iPSC experience preferred.
