We are looking for a Peer Recovery Specialist/Peer Coach to join a person-centered team dedicated to improving the health and wellness of people who use opioids, alcohol, and may have mental health disorders.


Our team works collaboratively and uses a structured approach to providing Recovery Support Services as part of long-term grant funded projects focused broadly on outreach, linkage and retention in HIV and viral hepatitis care for people with opioid, alcohol, and mental health disorders. We strive to link each client/patient to evidence-based Medications to treat OUD and or AUD and integrate harm reduction methodologies as a key aspect of our care. All team members contribute to a supportive, productive, collaborative work environment that holds patients, coworkers, clinic staff and providers in unconditional positive regard.


This position reports to the Program Director.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Professional and thoughtful interaction with clients, medical professionals, community-based organizations, and Addiction Treatment Programs.
  • Demonstrates ongoing commitment to working a part of a patient/person-centered Treatment Team based on a structured, team approach to collaborative care.
  • Manage a caseload of assigned patients across projects.
  • Teaches patients how to safely and effectively start taking buprenorphine (also known as initiation or induction)
  • Work with patients according to specific project protocols and patient-developed goals
  • Track a caseload of patients using project-specific registries so that no one falls through the cracks.
  • Use recommendations and treatment goals to support a care plan agreed upon by the Treatment Team
  • Base all Coaching and Recovery Support Services on evidence-based treatments as communicated with the Treatment Team.
  • With Team direction, be responsible for individual patients and caseload for working toward Treatment Targets.
  • Contribute to Team efforts to improve care for people with substance use and mental health disorders received through grants and interventions.
  • Attend all scheduled Peer Coach trainings, seminars and meetings.
  • Demonstrate ability to correctly use coaching and collaborative skills taught in trainings.
  • Administer standard evaluations to assess patient at regular time points.
  • Meet with patients in caseload at scheduled time points.
  • Attend weekly and monthly case review meetings and communicate individual patient progress toward patient-centered goals to the Treatment Team.
  • Support patients in understanding and working with their medical team, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations.
  • Support patients in creating realistic goals to improve their own health and well-being, specific to substance use, mental health, and infectious disease (like HIV or hep C)
  • Support patients to participate in their recommended medical care and treatment plans.
  • Support patients to communicate their needs to their medical providers.
  • Support patients to navigate and learn to use available resources independently.
  • Use the Electronic Medical Record to look up important information about each patients care - training and support provided.
  • Complete documentation of interaction with program clients / patients correctly and within 24 hours of interaction.
  • Use a provided work phone in order to be available to assigned patients in caseload during Monday Friday working hours only.
  • Some reporting and data entry needed via computer.
  • Some travel to clients and community partners may be required.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries and self-care.


Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • 2 years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation to travel to work sites when needed.


Preferred Qualifications


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Motivated, exceptional work ethic.
  • Understanding Recovery Support principles of hope, personal responsibility, empowerment, self-advocacy, opportunities, and the importance of using personal and community supports.
  • Understanding of principles of Harm Reduction and Medications to support wellness and Recovery.
  • Lived experience with HIV, substance use, or mental health disorders highly helpful and welcome.
  • Individual does not need to be in recovery from substance use her/himself, but must be able to communicate empathy through lived experience and must have demonstrated commitment to improving the lives and wellbeing of people who use drugs.
  • Ability to use, or willingness to learn to use, computer programs like Outlook email and calendar, Microsoft Excel, basic data entry programs, and the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Excellent verbal and good written communication.
  • Commitment to a positive, collaborative work environment that serves clinic patients, staff and providers in order to better care for patients.
  • Flexibility with work schedule days/hours needed.
  • Ongoing commitment to workplace safety regarding all infectious disease protocols, including flexibility with changing protocols as necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic including the wearing of quality well-fitting masks during the workday.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
