The Senior Associate Director of Development will play a lead role in helping to shape the priorities and operations of the Department of Medicine (DOM) Development Office and will be responsible for the planning, implementation and management of major and principal fundraising efforts for the benefit of the DOM from friends, grateful patients, and foundations. Serving as a thought partner for the Executive Director of Development and working with senior development staff members across Johns Hopkins, as well as faculty, care providers, administrators, and volunteer leaders, the Senior Associate Director will identify, strategize, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of prospects for clinical divisions, including Pulmonary, Geriatrics, Palliative and Hospice Care, Comprehensive Care Practice, and Clinical Allergy Immunology. Travel is associated with this role.
All fundraising activity will be coordinated within the Department of Medicine, the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the central development office of Johns Hopkins University.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop a comprehensive development and engagement business plan supporting the divisions of Pulmonary, Geriatrics, Palliative, and Hospice Care, Comprehensive Care Practice, and Clinical Allergy Immunology within the Department of Medicine. This position, in partnership with faculty, will inspire support for strategic fundraising priorities program to represent these needs internally and externally.
- Manage a portfolio of approximately 100-115 prospects with the goal of personally soliciting, or arranging for volunteer or institutional solicitation, for major and principal gifts to fund the priority needs of the Department of Medicine and its mission. The focus will be on gifts in the range of $100,000 to $3+ million.
- Serve as primary development liaison to faculty members in the divisions of Pulmonary, Geriatrics, Palliative and Hospice Care, Comprehensive Care Practice, and Clinical Allergy Immunology. Hold recurring meetings to encourage faculty participation in development activities; identify and evaluate giving potential of prospects; coordinate faculty participation in prospect solicitations and stewardship. Keep the development team current on faculty research initiatives and funding priorities. Become proficient in document development activity in the Johns Hopkins JHAS database.
- Complete 90 or more meaningful prospect and donor substantive interactions per year. Performance targets also include benchmarks for funds raised, proposals developed and submitted, visits, and portfolio penetration, among others.
- Solicit annual, major, and principal gifts from grateful patients, foundations, and former residents and fellows (alumni) across the department.
- Help motivate, educate, and train faculty and staff to successfully guide them through the development process to engage them as fundraising partners.
- Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, and other development materials for prospects and donors.
- Coordinate stewardship plans for donors. Research specific current-use and endowed funds, develop annual reports for donors and coordinate annual donor visits.
- Manage direct mail fundraising to alumni, donor and prospect constituency, and faculty. This includes drafting correspondence and coordinating details in-house and externally, including collaborating with the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG).
- Help to coordinate and manage the planning of development-related activities for the Department of Medicine including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events, as needed.
- Participate in department development meetings and in meetings and training through the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the central development office of Johns Hopkins University.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of all procedures of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine and the central development office of Johns Hopkins University.

The Sr. Associate Director of Development must possess effective relationship-building and communications skills, be highly organized, have strong oral, written, editorial, and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, staff, donors, and colleagues. The Sr. Associate Director must have development experience including personal solicitation of prospects at the $50,000+ level with a focus on six and seven-figure prospects, and be willing to participate in all aspects of the program's fundraising efforts that include personal visits, direct mail, and events. The Sr. Associate Director must be a self-starter, able to manage several projects simultaneously and understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis, and be able to flourish in a fast-paced environment. The Sr. Associate Director must be a cooperative, collegial individual who enjoys working with diverse populations.
- Ability and comfort working in an environment that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; manage projects; determine priorities; and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Comfortable working in a complex, multi-department organizational, dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with broadly diverse groups of constituents such as donors, alumni, faculty, staff, department chairs, hospital and university administration, fundraising colleagues, and/or institutional leadership preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills, and demonstrated effective writing and editorial skills.
- Strong organizational skills are required and the ability to manage more than one project simultaneously.
- Strong computer literacy skills are required and the ability to learn new software.
- Ability and willingness to travel, especially to the various Johns Hopkins Medicine locations; be flexible with scheduling as this position may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
