Under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the Research Program Manager, we are seeking a Research Program Assistant II who will be responsible for conducting tasks related to study recruitment and specimen collection for microbiome research protocols. One of the primary studies is a National Cancer Institute funded project aimed at identifying associations between early age onset colorectal cancer and the colon microbiome. The Research Program Assistant II will be the key person who interacts with physician investigators, clinic nurses, administrative schedulers and study participants to facilitate the collection of data forms and human research specimens according to the IRB protocol
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of a study physician, the Research Program Assistant II checks surgery and medical oncology clinic schedules and, ahead of scheduled appointment, contacts potential participants by telephone, informs them about the study and conducts a brief screening interview.
- The Research Program Assistant II also contacts potential participants, referred by collaborating physicians and study sites.
- Mails study materials to interested subjects and enters recruitment information into clinical research database.
- Obtains informed consent (either at a clinic visit or remotely) and facilitates collection of demographic survey information from research subjects.
- Acts in concert with study physician and nurses to collect research samples from participants as described in the IRB protocol including stool, blood, and colon biopsies.
- Conducts follow up phone calls to study participants.
- Manages study forms and maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Advises research team at Johns Hopkins in advance of specimen collection and coordinates sample delivery to laboratory personnel
- Enters data into computerized databases such as REDCap and on paper documents.
- Organizes and orders supplies used in specimen collection and processing.
- Advises research program manager of study problems and progress.
- Executes standard protocols to facilitate collection of research specimens and ensures their proper labeling, integrity and delivery to receiving laboratory staff.
- Adheres to guidelines regarding the sensitivity and confidential nature of patient information, including HIPAA regulations.
- Works semi-independently and will be responsible for managing his/her schedule to realize study recruitment goals.
- Travel between the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore campus and collaborating sites near Baltimore City individually or as part of a team.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- Two years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula
- Ability to use a laptop and personal computer.
- Knowledge of software, including Microsoft Word and Excel is needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Must be comfortable working with patient populations.
- Must be able to make decisions and act independently while keeping investigator informed.
- Highly attentive to detail and deadlines.
- Ability to think critically and to solve problems that arise related to study protocols.
- Ability to be flexible in work conditions and function well in a team setting.
- Excellent organizational skills required.
- Driver's license and access to reliable transportation.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
