The Pathology Department is seeking a Biostatistician whose work primarily involves performing statistical analyses using population cohort data collected in Uganda and also large-scale, open access national surveys and administrative databases. This individual will also help manage and analyze laboratory, clinical, and sociobehavioral survey data provided by collaborators. In addition, this individual will have the opportunity to help with the design of experiments and epidemiologic studies, communicate findings, and be involved in publication efforts. The projects will involve study questions related to infectious diseases and transfusion medicine. The analyst will work closely with researchers at JHU, the Rakai Health Sciences Program in Uganda, the National Institutes of Health, and collaborators at other institutions. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and committed to a common mission, a team effort, and collaborations across academia.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Consults with clinical and laboratory investigators to determine their needs with respect to analysis of data in collaboration with a member of the faculty.
  • Carries out appropriate methodologic procedures for statistical analysis of data; ranging from descriptive statistics to exploratory data analyses to causal inference.
  • Prepares written reports of the statistical analyses, including relevant statistical theory, references, methods, results, and conclusions.
  • Participates in regularly schedule meetings with study investigators and team.
  • Maintains appropriate systems for database associated management, including preparing codebooks, cleaning data, creating analytic data sets and performing quality assurance/quality control.


Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements

  • Experience with computers and knowledge of SAS, STATA, or R, as well as either Mac OS or Windows operating systems.
  • Ability to use the internet and web-based scholarly search engines (e.g., PubMed and Google Scholar).


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities 

  • Experience working with complex survey data, longitudinal data analysis, and advanced analytical methods (e.g., multiple imputation) is desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in consulting with researchers and understanding their problems.
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills in the preparation and presentation of reports.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details are required.
  • Excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple priorities and concurrent projects are required.
  • Ability to work independently and in concert with others.
  • Demonstrated experience in being proactive and taking initiative.


Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 50% of the time. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the work area or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard and mouse 75% of the day and must have dexterity for handling small glass slides and other specimens. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at work stations, gathering specimens.
  • Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color.
  • While this position works primarily in an office environment, there is activity in Laboratory environments - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Hospital Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
  • One-year related experience
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced proficiency in multiple statistical programming languages (e.g., STATA & R).
  • Minimum 2 years of related working experience or PhD in biostatistics can substitute for experience.
