The NMR Service Center in the Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Preclinical MRI Research Technologist who will be responsible for performing and assisting service center users with small animal and tissue specimen imaging studies. Primary job responsibilities include animal handling, operation and maintenance of two (9.4T and 11.7T) MRI scanners and other equipment under the service core director's guidance, and routine tasks for imaging lab upkeep. The successful candidate is expected to follow the institutional guidelines for preclinical research, be very detail-oriented, organized, and motivated to learn new skills in small animal and brain MRI.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform scans and assist service center users with MRI experiments.
- Maintain the MRI scanners and laboratory space, keep the area clean, order and maintain supplies.
- Monitor and fill liquid nitrogen and liquid helium coolants at biweekly and monthly intervals.
- Be responsible for monitoring the scanner usage, scheduling and billing.
- Test MRI protocols and perform simple debugging of problems.
- Maintenance of MRI data backup, data storage and transfer to users, and other routine administrative duties.
- Maintain compliance and training for small animal handling and use.
- Run and document routine QC tests to ensure the scanners are functioning properly.
- Provide regular updates to the core Director on issues and progresses.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
- Experience with small animal research and handling.
- Prior experience with MRI scanner usage, especially Bruker systems, is strongly preferred but not essential.
- Computer skills, including Windows/Linux operating systems, data storage and transfer, basic image processing software.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
