We are seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager who is available immediately to support a research program examining immune responses to two pathogens: influenza virus and Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Administrative oversight of the laboratory and help with experiments as needed.
- Ensure biosafety procedures are appropriately set-up and enforced, reagents are appropriately stored and evaluated, research equipment is maintained, and logs are kept, and laboratory personnel receives training and is following procedures.
- Responsible also for ordering reagents, developing, and keeping reagent databases and provide oversight of mouse colonies.
- Conduct experiments after discussion with the principal investigator and help other laboratory personnel with experiments as needed and time allows and maintain accurate records and results of their work.
- Overall organization of the laboratory and its personnel.
- Provide training and oversight of others working in the laboratory.
- Maintain records and ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements.
- Help with research experiments.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Experience with biosafety level 2 organisms.
- Flow cytometry.
- Mouse handling.
- Effective organizational and communication skills, both orally and in writing, are important for this position.
- Comfortable with basic cell biology assays and in conducting experiments with mice; be able to use sterile technique, be comfortable working with biosafety level 2 organisms and they must understand and utilize safe and proper techniques for handling of biohazardous materials.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in laboratory management and/or senior technical experience in related areas of research.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements for running a BSL2 laboratory.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
