The success of the School of Nursing sponsored projects and research funding strategy hinges on the identification of new prospects, as well as the continuation of sustained relationships with existing funding sources. The Nursing Office of Research Administration is developing a results-driven program, partnering with centers and institutes internal and external to the School of Nursing to foster an effective, proactive research funding strategy. To this end, we are seeking a Grant Writer & Editor who will work with faculty and staff in the design, content and preparation of sponsored project proposals in accordance with sponsor standards and requirements. The Grant Writer will participate in writing narrative sections and editing narrative drafts, particularly those that require technical expertise and awareness of education trends and issues. Assists with graphic selection and proposal layout.


Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate information of a highly complex nature in a clear, precise, and compelling way.
  • Convey technical information in a clear and accessible manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proof, standardize, and edit proposal sections written by peers and other writers on the proposal team to ensure they reflect the language of the proposal.
  • Assists faculty in preparing proposal narratives and documents in compliance with University, sponsor and federal guidelines and deadlines.
  • Reviews and provides feedback on proposal narratives and documents.
  • Research appropriate information to resolve questions or refers to team members who have the ability to resolve the question.
  • In coordination with NORA staff, creates, updates and maintains templates, boilerplate information and online resources that support proposal development and submission processes.
  • Provides consultation services on research strategies, tactics, tools and best practices for the development of grants for submission, as requested.
  • Conduct training sessions for faculty and students on grant writing strategies.
  • Develop and sustain contacts with SON and university leadership, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
  • Develop new ways to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness of proposal generation while maintaining and improving proposal quality for federal and foundation grants.
  • Participate in kick off meetings for teams planning to respond to select Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Expert (SMEs) technical teams to establish technical specifications and to determine subject material to be created for proposal development.
  • Research grant-making organizations and analyzing them to identify likely funding sources for School of Nursing programs or research.
  • Develop and maintain mechanisms to coordinate and track ongoing funding opportunities.
  • Work on special projects for the Vice Dean for Research as requested.
  • May direct the activities of support staff.

  • Demonstrated superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong research skills with willingness and ability to quickly synthesize complex information in accessible and actionable formats.
  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner.
  • Knowledge of style manuals, such as Chicago, US Government Publishing Office, and Associated Press.
  • Experience in successful management of multiple concurrent projects to meet deadlines.
  • Experience in developing, writing and submitting successful grant applications.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work in a complex fast-paced and high-profile environment with short deadlines, competing priorities and intense pressure to perform.
  • Experience in working both independently and as part of a team, exercising a high degree of initiative.
  • Experience in successfully working effectively and cooperatively with an ethnically and culturally diverse population.
  • Strong problem-solver; ability to navigate various viewpoints to develop consensus.
  • Ability to be flexible and self-motivated in order to deliver high quality work product in multiple communication mediums.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in related Technical/Scientific field.
  • Must possess in-depth subject matter knowledge.
  • One-year related experience. Writing samples may be requested during the selection process.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
