Under the leadership of Dr. Farouk Dey, the inaugural vice provost for integrative learning and life design, Johns Hopkins University has developed an ambitious vision to continue to integrate life design, experiential learning, and mentoring in the academic and co-curricular learning experience for all students and postdoctoral fellows. The Life Design Lab, located in the newly renovated Imagine Center, supports the undergraduate population, as well as masters and adult certificate students, on their journey from Hopkins to a fulfilled and intentional future.


We are seeking an Employer Engagement Specialist who will report to the Director of Employee Engagement and will execute on the Life Design Labs vision, strategy, and objectives to enhance and deliver the professional development, career advancement, and life design to our students through cultivation and maintenance of strategic relationships with employers.


This position builds and maintains relationships with employer organizations in specific areas (engineering-related industries, non-profit and/or government) for student internship and permanent employment, manages employer/student interactions within initiative-based programming and both virtual and on-campus visits, and assists the director with all office initiatives, programming and strategic planning. The Employer Engagement Specialist is charged with building the Life Design Labs brand as a source of talent for employers and with supporting content and resource development related to the hiring processes, timing, and competencies which will allow our students to thrive in a competitive employment market.


The Employer Engagement Specialist will become familiar with the student landscape, desired outcomes and established initiative-based hiring and networking events at Johns Hopkins University and support the implementation of programs, support systems and content to connect our students with employers looking to present opportunities to our student population. They will work with members of the Life Design Lab to continue the growth of established departmental based initiatives by connecting relevant employers in specific areas (particular industries, non-profit and/or government) to events and workshops targeting specific student populations, both virtually and within the Imagine Center.


The Life Design Labs efforts are also driven by initiative-based programs that span the academic calendar. The Employer Engagement Specialist is expected to actively participate in the planning and execution of programs that include employers in specific areas (particular industries, non-profit and/or government) and impact our entire student population throughout the year.


This position is based in Baltimore and is a primarily remote role (maximum 2 days on campus per week).


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages ongoing relationships with companies, agencies and organizations, domestically and internationally, in specific areas (particular industry, non-profit and/or government), that leads to employment opportunities (internships and full-time) for students.
  • Networks with alumni and other sources within specific areas (particular industries, non-profit and/or government) to strengthen and broaden relationships.
  • Executes on innovative outreach strategies that will strengthen, sustain and/or broaden relationships with employers.
  • Employer Communication; supports the preparation and regular distribution of communications to employer partners.
  • Coordinates with employer partners to conduct on-campus/virtual/remote/hybrid employer focused events, info sessions, on-campus interviews, etc.
  • Acquires new employer relationships based on hiring and student interest data identifies new opportunities to increase employment opportunities.
  • Assists employers with campus outreach to students, including promotion of opportunities, virtual and in-person interviews, participation internship and direct hire placement, and other employer needs.
  • Collaborating with Life Design Lab staff to build and maintain a network of employers and mentors across varied careers who can attend courses, programs, and networking events.
  • Engage in social media, digital outlets, and academic and professional journals.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The Ideal Candidate

  • The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to maintain a portfolio as an account manager in business development, employer relations, talent acquisition or alumni development. They will maintain a portfolio of employers that represent a few different segments of our student population. (Experience working with companies that recruit students with engineering degrees is preferred but not required.)
  • The ideal candidate is comfortable with co-working, flexible work arrangements, and presents skills in relationship development and engaging employers in groups and digital outlets.
  • The ideal candidate is a self-starter with the ability to work independently and is motivated to engage with employers, alumni, students, colleagues and others to help employers access talent and students meet their unique career goals and secure meaningful career opportunities.
  • The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to facilitate change and help individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds (including International students) with varying degrees of professional experience accomplish their goals.
  • The ideal candidate is flexible and resilient, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and navigate change.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Five years related experience, preferably in career services, human resources, and/or recruiting.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree.
  • Professional experience with accounts or recruiting in biotech, medical devices, engineering, global corporations, healthcare, or government and non-profit organizations.
  • Knowledge of highly selective college or university settings, and familiarity with operations of the world of work and university networks.
  • Experience in presenting or facilitating in both in-person and online formats.
  • Experience creating content (video, digital, written) and utilizing social media for the purposes of engaging and educating diverse audiences, and influencing public opinion.
  • Ability to translate student experiences to employment as evidenced by prior experience in either a government, non-profit, education, or private sector setting.
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective assessment methods and articulating strategic priorities.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
