The Enterics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a full-time Research Specialist ll to assist with ongoing projects in the lab. This position would involve providing laboratory, analytical and administrative assistance for several large studies involving collaborations from institutions worldwide. The group is currently studying adult diarrheal disease in Cameroon, the genomic epidemiology of cholera in Africa and cholera diagnostic evaluation and vaccine trials in cholera endemic areas among other things. A successful candidate must be able to work independently and under limited supervision.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The position involves a mixture of laboratory work, data analysis and international travel to train our partners on laboratory techniques relevant to the research. Laboratory duties include microbiology (i.e. culture and identification of specific bacteria), ELISA, immunoblot methods, electrophoresis, PCR, qPCR, and basic tissue culture.
  • The candidate should be able to follow established procedures or protocols and work with their supervisor to develop or optimize new protocols or assays and design experimental approaches for research projects as needed.
  • The position requires work with biohazardous materials, and the candidate must follow all necessary safety precautions for working with such materials.
  • A successful candidate must be highly organized and is required to maintain inventories for samples and lab supplies as well as keep a laboratory notebook detailing the results of all experiments.
  • The candidate must be able to make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts, this may include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel.
  • The candidate may also have the opportunity to assist with data analysis and make scientific contributions to writing of manuscripts and grants. There are opportunities to preform statistical analyses as well as advanced molecular analysis (VNTR, WGS). The research technologist will also be expected to help prepare figures and tables for manuscripts where they will be co-authors and assist with writing up results as needed. Coursera online coursework is offered to all employees and can be used for career development on the job. Hopkins also has tuition support each year as an employee benefit.
  • This position may require international travel 1-3 times per year. During these trips, the research technologist may be required to prepare and conduct laboratory trainings for partner organizations abroad. Routine lab work and international trainings will require supply and equipment procurement, interface with vendors and shipping.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
