We are seeking a Director of University Student Accounts who will report to the Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Services, (SEAM), and has a dotted line to the Associate Vice Provost, Finance and Administration for University Student Services (USS). This position oversees a staff of 19 full-time employees.


The DUSA is responsible for providing the overall vision and direction for the SEAM Student Accounts Office, a Shared Services Center responsible for all tuition and fee billing (including third party billing), refunds, collections, and 1098-T tax reporting supporting all nine Johns Hopkins University schools. The DUSA must provide leadership in the overall management, planning, supervision, and organization of the SEAM Student Accounts Office; recommend, design, champion and implement process enhancements to continually improve the student experience; and provide excellent customer service. The DUSA must establish, implement and monitor policies and procedures to manage billing and collection of university fees, disbursement of aid, refunding, reporting, payment plans, and other related functions. The ideal candidate will build strong and productive relationships with SEAM functional leads, deans, school partners, and other executive staff to understand and support school student accounting needs.


The DUSA for SEAM, maintains financial records for over 30,000 students across nine schools at JHU including Undergraduate, Graduate, and Part-Time Programs.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic support, thought leadership, and technical experience in the design and evolution of university-wide student billing functions.
  • Develop strategies and lead transformational efforts to improve customer service, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Develop unit strategic priorities focused on improving service to students and increasing operational efficiencies.
  • Promote and foster a culture that champions and supports continual improvements to the student experience.
  • Represent the university with respect to student account interests on cross-functional issues or initiatives.
  • Oversee and manage the SEAM Student Accounts Office, responsible for billing and collection of university fees, disbursement of aid, refunding, reporting, payment plans, and other related functions.
  • Oversee processing of all student charges and credits in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Oversee the collections process, which include creating and monitoring A/R, calling on delinquent accounts, preparing accounts to be turned over to collection agencies, and updating student accounts.
  • Oversee and manage a third-party billing/payment application and other evolving functions.
  • Determine priorities and manage resources to maintain and enhance the accuracy of students' accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal and State policies and procedures regarding billing, Title IV and other refunds, collections, tax reporting, and data privacy.
  • Establish effective working relationships with partner divisions in resolving short-term issues and promoting long-term initiatives, such as: Financial Aid, Registration, Admissions, Treasury Operations and other departments to ensure accurate student financial records.
  • Participate in student information system and other technology RFP and vendor selection processes.
  • Oversee user testing and implementation of new systems, software and system upgrades. Recommend enhancements to systems for improved accuracy and display of data for students, parents, and administrative users.
  • Serve on university-wide and divisional committees, e.g., SBS Users Group, Tuition Refund Appeals Committee, Leave of Absence Policies, Term Start Operations, etc.
  • Lead/chair committees, subcommittees, working groups, and/or projects as requested.
  • Establish and maintain customer service standards and metrics within SEAM Student Accounts.
  • Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction to the campus community through efficient and timely service.
  • Support audits and evaluate audit recommendations/options for implementation and budgetary consequences.
  • Establish, track and monitor departmental budget. Also establish budget for Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering Allowance for Doubtful Account/ Bad Debt Expense and ensure proper funding.
  • Develop and support efforts to establish and maintain a collaborative work environment, promote staff development, and foster service excellence.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required in Finance, Accounting, Business Management or related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively related experience required, including supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience in student accounts or general accounting setting required.
  • High level of business aptitude, quantitative skills, and strong internal control and business ethic.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters Degree preferred.
  • Prior work experience in an academic setting preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to handle confidential information; diplomatic manner needed to resolve problems or concerns of parents, students, and administrators.
  • Prior experience with system selection and implementation preferred. Exceptional customer service with strong student-centered focus; commitment to student satisfaction and success which includes the ability to work effectively with a diverse employee and student population as well as collaborate effectively with administrators and others to achieve goals.
  • Knowledge of federal cash management regulations.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
