Johns Hopkins seeks an effective, enterprising, versatile, creative, and nimble Communications Specialist to help chronicle the daily activities of the university. You will work with peers in communications and partners across the institution to learn and write about some of our most important strategic priorities and the people behind them, promoting understanding and appreciation of Johns Hopkins by developing engaging stories.
The successful candidate will have creative ideas about how to best tell these stories and help them find an audience, cultivating strong relationships across the university and working closely with colleagues in video, photography, social media, and design. They will be proactive, personable, curious, and have demonstrated experience writing effectively about the activities and strategic priorities of a major organization.
The successful candidate will also perform other duties as assigned to advance the mission of University Communications.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Identify and develop compelling stories about the work and key strategic initiatives of the university and the activities of its students, faculty, and staff.
- Write brief news stories about a wide range of university activities, with a focus on university administration and the work of the Office of Economic Development and Community. Partnerships, the Office of Government and Community Affairs, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and other groups.
- Regularly contribute ideas to content planning and brainstorming discussions.
- Proactively collaborate with communications colleagues to create compelling digital packages with video, audio, photos, illustrations and/or infographics.
- Edit, proofread, and produce content for publication on the universitys news website.
- Contribute to the development of newsletters and other editorial materials as needed.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Familiarity and experience with A.P. style.
- Ability to work with web content management systems, such as Drupal or WordPress.
- Ability to communicate effectively via social media.
- Experience editing photos in Photoshop or other similar software.
- Experience with metrics performance tracking systems, particularly Google Analytics.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related field.
- Two years related experience.
- Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

- Strong news judgment and demonstrated skills in reporting, writing, and/or editing.
- Strong interpersonal communications skills with individuals of all levels in an organization.
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills.

- Demonstrated ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends, as necessary)

Starting Salary Range: $44,850-$61,600-$78,360 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
