We are seeking a Sr. Research Assistant who will be high-level administrative support that will be able to refine and participate in laboratory protocols and various research activities of Dr. Gills program of research, including laboratory and clinical activities. Further, participating as a team member in writing manuscripts, and grant development at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing (JHU). There are multiple studies ongoing involving traumatic brain injury research as well as symptoms from PTSD, depression, and other traumatic events in correlation to biomarker discovery and treatment.
The Sr. Research Assistant will fulfill the responsibilities needed for day-to-day operation of the study aims and administrative needs for a variety of projects. The position includes application of research skills (about 70%), grant administration (15%), and multiple project coordination responsibilities (15%). The primary duty of the Sr. Research Assistant is to provide laboratory research, analysis, and work closely with the study PIs to coordinate, implement, manage, and evaluate the research strategy.
This position is funded by grants, with a continuing position possible pending available funding.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Will participate in undertaking protocols and assays within the laboratory including miRNA extraction, sweat extraction, blood processing protocols, and assay analysis on multiple instruments within the laboratory.
- Will be responsible for data tracing, reproducibility, and proper research documentation techniques.
- Participate in the development and implementation SOPs for laboratory safety and operational purposes.
- Participate in analysis and interpretation of data using various relevant computer software applications and aid in preparation of summaries of laboratory findings in final form for publication in reports and papers to be presented at scientific meetings or publication in scientific journals.
- Assist, as needed, in participant recruitment, enrollment, or data collection. Duties may include greeting and screening potential study participants, setting up interviews, checking data tools, offering snacks, or coordinating payment of participant incentives.
- Assist in basic data management activities, such as qualitative data transcription, quantitative data entry, or file merging and raw data review for accuracy.
- Assist in preparation of research literature reviews, manuscripts, and slide presentations, as needed, of study activities and findings. Format references for manuscripts using software such as Endnote or Mendeley. Edit and apply advanced formatting and graphics to documents, reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
- This employee will participate in various research projects and collaborations, performing proper analysis on samples with assays designed by their developed research protocols.
- Keep calendar of key grant deadlines, such as research progress report due dates, and send reminders accordingly.
- Other duties as assigned by the PIs.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Able to coordinate wet lab study protocols.
- Able to multi-task and work multiple projects.
- Advanced computer skills to include MS Office applications, as well as experience with software such as Adobe Acrobat and EndNote (or other reference manager).
- Ability to work via phone, virtual, and/or video-conferencing platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
- Able to work autonomously and meet required deadlines, including having independent decision-making and trouble-shooting abilities.
- Strong communication and organization skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Highly motivated individual with ability to work on multiple and competing priorities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly build relationships with diverse team members and community partners.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift items in the lab, when necessary, not to exceed 25 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
- Two years of related experience.
- Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- MPH or MS in relevant field.
- Experience working in an academic research setting.
- Experience or training in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods.
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
- Proficiency in writing, presenting and developing data.
- Ability to develop grant proposals.
- Documented ability to oversee fellows.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
