The Department of Neurology is looking for an experienced laboratory researcher for the position of a Sr, Research Specialist. The Sr. Research Specialist will join the productive research program in our well-funded laboratory focused on the development of innovative cell and gene therapies for the treatment of inflammation and cancers, using immune- and virus-based approaches.
This position requires a proficient and experienced laboratory scientist with a solid foundation in molecular biology and tissue culture. Experience with rodent experiments will be a plus. After introduced to the techniques and platforms, successful candidate can conduct research independently or with minimal supervision. With limited supervision by the PI, this individual will design and perform laboratory experiments, analyze data, and may also contribute to manuscripts. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. This position will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Exhibit a good understanding of the molecular biology and tissue culturing.
- Performs routine and complex research laboratory, including sterile cell culture, molecular biology techniques and small rodent handling.
- Independently processes and analyzes data, formulates conclusions and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results, grant reports or scientific presentations.
- Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood. May also utilize other sophisticated instrumentation such as fluorescence, luminescence spectrophotometer.
- Meet regularly with PI and colleagues to review lab data, troubleshoot problems, prioritize tasks, and discuss newly published scientific literature relevant to the cell and gene therapy field.
- Educate, train, and supervise new students and other research staff that assist in the project.
- The Sr. Research Specialist will monitor equipment performance and maintenance and be responsible for scheduling repairs and renewing service contracts when necessary.
- Keep the laboratory prepared for safety inspections.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Able to perform scientific research through conducing laboratory experiments using a variety of techniques, such as cell culture, cloning, microscopy, DNA extraction, PCR, Western blotting, tumor animal procedures, and others.
- Handling experimental rodent models.
- Ability to follow protocols, policies and procedures and respond appropriately when presented with novel situations.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required.
- Able to organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments.
- Have excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse research staff and with confidential materials.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Four years' experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates with a Ph.D. or Masters degree are strongly encouraged to apply and/or 2-10 years of experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques, coupled with knowledge of biological sciences, molecular biology, or chemistry.
- Experience with handling rodents will be a plus.
