We are seeking a Research Specialist II who will participate in the design of experiments and analyzes data, works independently and manages daily research projects. This individual will serve as a critical lab member and assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, data collection/maintenance, and organization of the laboratory. This position will be responsible for molecular analysis of liquid biopsies, management of general lab supplies, equipment maintenance, inter-lab liaison, and training of new lab members. On the technical level, the research specialist II wil organize specimen databases, attend additional training related to database design, and reports data in tables and figures.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as inter-lab liaison.
- Runs all assays and completes assigned tasks without assistance, and helps to develop, optimize, and implement new assays and protocols.
- Create and run standard operating procedures and technical protocols on the basis of optimized design, independently and with minimal or no instruction.
- Use cutting-edge technologies and evaluate them to implement for routine use in the laboratory, independently and with minimal or no instruction.
- Perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures, independently and with minimal or no instruction, and train others in the laboratory to ensure proficiency before others are tasked to perform the same procedures.
- Document work performed and establish databases in compliance with good laboratory practice.
- Design and manage databases.
- Manage lab supply inventory and equipment maintenance, lab safety compliance, and assistant other lab members by providing necessary training and technical support.
- Develop protocols for PI approval and make scientific contribution to protocol development, optimization, and implementation.
- Design experimental approaches, including molecular analysis of liquid biopsies integral to sponsored research projects.
- Collaborate in development of new techniques with lab team members including the PI, postdoc fellows, and research coordinators, as well as researchers from other Urology labs in establishing processes to control technical parameters critical in the proper functioning of common equipment.
- Contributes to co-authored publications communicated by the PI or collaborators across the country.
- Application of scientific knowledge and use gained from research experience to make independent judgements and decisions.
- For assigned project tasks, the position will work independently.
- Information source for 7 lab members on a day-to-day basis and troubleshoots/address the technical needs of researchers both within the PIs lab and from outside collaborators.
- Responsible for training of liquid biopsy handling and processing, as well as instrument set up, utilization, and data generation.
- Data processing and analysis skills, and responsibilities include preparation of data tables and figures for scientific presentation and scientific publications, as well as grant applications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Able to efficiently use Microsoft Office programs: Excel, Word and Powerpoint.
- Ability to learn new computer skills and applications quickly including how to install software, firmware, and manipulate hardware/peripherals
- Must be able to efficiently and proactively communicate with supervisors and coworkers, manipulate small and large test tubes, flasks and pipettes, move some moderately-large equipment and boxes, type quickly, write nimbly and legibly, see very well at a short distance, communicate clearly by phone, move within the building and around campus, and work at the bench (and sometimes at a microscope with micromanipulator, etc.) for extended periods.
