Candidate sought to fill a Communications Associate role in the Department of Health, Behavior & Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The candidate will provide communications leadership to the Bloomberg Philanthropies-funded Data for Health Initiatives Gender Equity Unit. This is a global project including over 25 low- and middle-income countries that focuses on integrating gender equity into public health data systems.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Will be responsible for disseminating the successes of the project and advertising the tools and training opportunities available from the Unit. For example, this could include creating social media content to advertise a training opportunity or summarizing research findings for a lay audience. 
  • Develop, plan, implement, and maintain a comprehensive strategic and innovative communications plan for the Gender Equity Unit (GEU), including social media and web presence. The plan is to be carried out through a wide variety of communication vehicles and include GEU activities such as project findings, publications/reports, and significant initiatives and programs.
  • Promote the visibility of GEU success stories, events, programs, products, staff, and students through a variety of approaches (both web and print) and for both internal and external audiences.
  • Solicit content from GEU faculty and staff to support public relations and marketing efforts.
  • Liaise with external partners and contractors to collect material for the Units website and to highlight dissemination activities
  • Develop and implement strategies to effectively communicate project findings in the Data for Health Initiative countries.
  • Generate and recommend original and creative approaches and content to communicate and promote specific subject matter, including branding.
  • Ensure all communications adhere to the School and GEU design style guides and that quality of products meet GEU standards.
  • Work with GEU staff to obtain quality visual assets for reporting and promotion.
  • Identify visuals for projects, recommend media for dissemination, develop, and disseminate key messages.
  • Oversee administration, maintenance, and content management of the GEU website.
  • Ensure content is up-to-date and accurate and that all links work.
  • Ensure webpage design adheres to the School and GEU design style guides and with quality that meets GEU standards.
  • Report monthly on website analytics, number and content of social posts, with recommendations on how to improve the reach and effectiveness of GEU communications.
  • Draft and edit op-eds, letters to the editor, news releases, talking points, speeches, newsletters, research blasts, presentations, and other materials.
  • Write, design, produce and edit multiple and varied publications, reports, web pages, grants, executive remarks, media releases, videos, fact sheets, infographics, presentations, announcements, campaigns, and conference booths, including strategic selection and layout of artwork, graphics, pictures, and illustrations.
  • Work with department and school-level communications teams to amplify messaging and project successes.
  • Manage media interview requests for GEU faculty.
  • Seek out speaking opportunities and media engagement for the Principal Investigator (Dr. Michelle Kaufman) and other GEU faculty as desired.
  • Write quarterly (or monthly) GEU newsletter using Mailchimp.
  • Manage students, vendors, and other contract workers to execute communication needs.
  • Develop, update, and maintain a public relations/marketing calendar of award submission dates, conferences, thematic days in global health, meetings, and other related events.
  • Advertise GEU events (trainings, technical assistance opportunities, contractor/hiring positions) through internal and external communication channels.
  • Develop innovative and compelling content for multimedia materials that support the goals and objectives of the GEU.
  • Collaborate with GEU faculty and staff to write reports for donors.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for donors on web analytics and social media channels.
  • Stay abreast of relevant global health news, developments and events and keep GEU faculty and staff up to date as needed.
  • Conduct communications and marketing trainings for GEU affiliates as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Four years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • Marketing, communications, or public relations agency work experience
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and coordination skills and comfortable working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative in creating new content while maintaining collaborative relationships.
  • Strong working knowledge of graphic design and social media strategies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously successfully.
  • Proactive in anticipating communications need.
  • Able to travel internationally, as needed.
  • Residence in Maryland or a contiguous state to facilitate in-person meetings.

Starting Salary Range: $61,070-$83.900-$106,710 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
