We are seeking a Director of Research who will be responsible for managing the CTY research lab, focusing on gifted education through the lens of cognitive and educational psychology. The Director of Research will lead a collaborative research team in conducting evidence-based research inclusive of various assessments and educational strategies aimed to assess the potential and abilities of gifted and talented children and youth from historically underserved populations. Interest and ability to contribute to the development of new research projects and passion for improving the experience of gifted and talented youth from all communities and in all demographics are essential. This role will provide management to a team of full-time and casual part-time research staff and serve as a liaison to faculty in other units of the University to facilitate data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as an objective lead on cross-departmental projects related to research.
  • Meet regularly with other objective leads to ensure that cross-departmental projects are aligned with each other and meeting objectives.
  • Work with CTYs Strategic Leadership Team to operationalize the CTY mission in research.
  • Manage the administrative and scientific implementation of research protocols for CTY research studies. Will collaborate with faculty, develop protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and supervise all study-related activities.
  • Supervise staff in the CTY lab including full-time staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and casual part-time staff.
  • Manage research staff members (recruitment, performance appraisal, feedback, discipline concerns, separations).
  • Responsible for the high-level management of research projects including regulatory submissions and other compliance requirements (IRB submissions, etc.).
  • Serve as the Principal Investigator on grants originating from CTY that align with the Directors specific area of expertise.
  • Provide support to other Principal Investigators in submitting grant applications, IRB applications, and progress reports.
  • Oversee training and supervision of staff and/or students for data collection and fieldwork activities and provide general lab management support.
  • Uses professional judgment in handling information and is sensitive to research team, individual and all levels of organizational concerns; makes use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling and fact-based management to drive decision making; and help investigators develop new insights and understanding of research program data.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to operate independently, with guidance provided by CTY and the Senior Director of Innovation and Continuous Improvement.
  • Develop, organize and participate in research presentations; draft and edit research reports and manuscripts for scientific peer review publication.
  • Participate in meetings with local schools and other community-based organizations including providing research presentations to stakeholders (educators, parents, district representatives).
  • Lead efforts to provide training to educators in partnering programs consistent with defined research protocols, etc.
  • Manage and update a literature review on gifted education as it relates to the themes and projects of the CTY research lab with a focus on underserved populations as well as topics raised within the broader CTY community.
  • Identify and build relationships with faculty and staff at CTY, JHU, and external partners who are working on similar or related projects.
  • Project management (Monitoring progress, scheduling of work and meetings, documenting the project's development, etc.).
  • Responsible for assembling project plans, team and work assignments, directing and monitoring work efforts on a daily basis, identifying resource needs, performing quality review, and escalating functional, quality and timeline issues appropriately.
  • Be involved in scientific discussions with collaborators, PIs, and funding organizations, and have authority to make independent decisions about conduct and troubleshooting.
  • Proactively share recent research findings at CTY and in the field with the CTY community.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral-level Degree in Education, Cognitive Psychology, Neuroscience, Psychology or related discipline required.
  • An individual in a doctoral degree program may be eligible for the position if evidence is provided on the expected date of completion.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years related experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to appropriately obtain, present and report evidence based outcomes.
  • Experience with quantitative research methods and statistics; familiarity with qualitative methods.
  • Experience with IRB, data privacy, and research compliance issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with a wide variety of audiences including minors. Experience presenting to multiple audiences with ability to synthesize and interpret narrative and numerical data.
  • Excellent written communication.
  • Some experience working in an academic setting is preferred.
  • Some experience working with minors in research is preferred.
  • Familiarity with publishing in peer-reviewed journals is preferred.
  • Grantsmanship and presentation skills also highly desired.
  • Familiarity with program evaluation is a plus.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to read, understand, and synthesize research.
  • Ability to effectively manage complex projects and coordinate large groups.
  • Some knowledge of gifted education, with working knowledge of challenges in educational equity and under-represented populations is preferred.


Internal & External Contacts

  • The successful candidate will be required to work with members of the CTY staff and JHU faculty and staff throughout the university working on related projects and issues.
  • There will also be extensive contact with the external school communities including students, parents, teachers, and administrators from the individual school level up through and including system-wide offices, depending on the research study.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification

  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and familiarity with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, or R).


Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer; dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone, email; must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.


Supervisory Responsibility

  • Supervision of CTY Senior Research Project Coordinator.
  • Additional supervision and direction to part-time casual lab staff and affiliates, including postdoctoral fellows and graduate students associated with projects.
