The Department of Neurology is seeking a Neuro Ophthalmic/Vestibular Technician. This position will function as both an ophthalmic and a vestibular technician; the vestibular testing skills will be learned on the job (no past experience is required). Applicants should have either completed an ophthalmic technician training program, or have experience performing the duties of an ophthalmic technician listed below to be able to assist the neuro-ophthalmologist by performing ocular examination and testing.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Ophthalmic Technician Duties
- Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history; past ocular history; family history; systemic illnesses; medications; allergies and drug reactions.
- Basic skills and lensometry.
- Measure visual acuity at distance and near utilizing test appropriate for age and education, and records accurately. Perform pinhole testing when indicated.
- Perform Ishihara or HRR color vision testing.
- Accurately measure and record current lens power with a lensometer.
- Perform and record Amsler grid.
- Properly operate common non-automated and automated ophthalmic equipment including, but not limited to Humphrey visual field and OCT
Patient Services
- Instill eye drops and understand the indication/contraindication for use in dilation, for use in tests requiring corneal anesthetic including tonometry, and for use in other tests that may be required by the physician.
- Assist physically or visually disabled patients.
Basic Tonometry
- Perform accurate applanation tonometry and properly disinfect the tonometer.
- Perform accurate Tono-pen tonometry and properly disinfect and store the tonometer.
- Understand the principles of scleral rigidity and the factors that alter intraocular pressure
Instrument Maintenance
- Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment.
- Stock examination rooms in assigned area and ensure medication expiration dates are current.
- Disinfect and maintain examination rooms.
General Medical Knowledge
- Maintain current CPR certification.
- Understand and practice the fundamentals of microbial control.
- Must complete all currently required JHMI courses, including self-learning educational packets and HIPAA regulations
Clinical Optics
- Perform accurate refractometry to determine the subjective refractive error.
- Perform accurate retinoscopy to determine the objective refractive error.
- Lensometry – determine optical centers and determine direction of prism base.
Basic Ocular Motility
- Evaluate sensory status including Titmus stereopsis test and Worth four-dot.
Visual Fields
- Perform a visual field with a tangent screen, or HVF
- Calibrate the perimeter for accurate testing.
Photography
- Photograph the ocular fundus.
- Correctly differentiate right and left fundus photos
Vestibular Clinics
- Vestibular testing will be performed on patients seen in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center and various JH emergency departments .
Vestibular Technician Duties
- Instruct patients on testing and manage patient anxiety regarding testing. Work with research protocols, including learning key clinical research policies, obtaining consent from patients, and assisting in data collection and data management.
- Analyze data from clinical testing using standard protocols and prepare final results reports for review by physicians and other providers.
- Assist with maintenance, repairs and upgrading of testing equipment.
- Order all supplies required for testing on a timely basis
- Monitors patient needs during and post-testing and call for additional medical intervention if required.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Employee is expected to work in the emergency department and out-patient clinic setting.
- Employee will be trained (on the job) in all technical aspects of vestibular responsibilities, including testing, data analysis, preparation of reports, maintenance of equipment, ordering of supplies.
- Applicant should have requisite people skills, patience and sensitivity to perform duties listed above.

- Experienced and comfortable with use and operation of computers, devices, and mobile technology.
- Comfortable learning new computing skills, including using use of multiple and evolving new software and hardware tools, device software, and data transfer procedures.
- Comfortable doing basic troubleshooting with technology failures, and directly communicating with information technology experts for more challenging technology problems.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
- CPR certification also required.
- Experienced with use of standard software platforms such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Epic electronic health record software preferred.
