The Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative (VTSI) promotes STEM pathways and STEM PhD growth for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). The Initiative was established through a $150 million gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies. Led by the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Diversity and Partnerships (AVP), the VTSI is located within the Office of the Provost, which is part of the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
The VTSI seeks an extraordinary Senior Associate Director, Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative for this groundbreaking project. In collaboration with the AVP and the Office of the Provost, the Senior Associate Director will plan and administer the work of the VTSI and coordinate with senior leadership and internal and external stakeholders to realize the VTSI mission and goals. The Senior Associate Director will work directly with the AVP and the Office of the Provost to develop and oversee academic, mentorship/counseling, professional and career development, and cohort building program activities directed at promoting the professional and life success of VTSI STEM PhD scholars; advance and support new and expanded summer undergraduate and post-baccalaureate program experiences to attract and excite students in the STEM training pathway to STEM graduate education and STEM careers; and assist with fostering and maintaining inter-institutional partnerships and activities with HBCUs, MSIs, and other key stakeholders to achieve the VTSI mission to expand opportunity in the STEM training pathway and enhance the diversity of those with STEM PhDs in leadership roles in the STEM enterprise for transformative impact across the nation and the globe.
The Senior Associate Director will assist with oversight and management of VTSI staff responsible for the day-to-day operations of the initiative, including admissions, communications, evaluation and reporting efforts for the VTSI. The position reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Diversity and Partnerships. This position will be full time.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives and Partnerships
- Work collaboratively with the AVP to manage, administer and plan the work of the VTSI and associated graduate diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with the AVP to build and strengthen relationships with historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and other minority serving institutions (MSIs), to catalyze partnerships and connections between JHU stakeholders and HBCU/MSI stakeholders to advance joint pedagogical missions, and to visit partner institutions to share the VTSI and meet with prospective VTSI scholars.
- Work with the AVP to plan inaugural community building and networking activities.
- Oversee development and maintenance of an HBCU/MSI database/hub to support VTSI operations and partnerships.
- Work with the AVP to manage the day to day operations of the VTSI team.
- Work closely with the AVP to oversee and manage the data analysis and reporting efforts for the VTSI.
- Collaborate with VTSI leads at partner institutions to achieve VTSI partnership goals.
- Work with the AVP to develop and manage agendas and meetings of Inaugural Partners and other VTSI advisory groups.
Administrative Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise the staff of the VTSI team; ensure that staff are clear on the alignment of their jobs and supporting actions with the mission and goals of the VTSI; provide effective feedback and coaching about performance including preparing written evaluations, setting goals, and assessing the extent to which the work performed meets desired outcomes.
- Participate with the AVP or represent the AVP in meetings with senior leadership at external partner institutions and at JHU to advance the work of the VTSI and graduate diversity and inclusion at JHU.
- Supervise and work with VTSI staff and VTSI partners to ensure that programs are effectively carried out to meet program goals.
- Participate with the AVP in planning the strategic direction of the VTSI including in admissions, mentoring, outreach, community building, and professional development.
- Oversee training of VTSI affiliated faculty and staff.
Admissions & Communications
- Oversee and help set priorities for the central VTSI admissions function for STEM PhD education. This includes management of prospective students (marketing & recruitment), recruiting events, applicant experience and communication, and coordination with JHU STEM PhD programs.
- Review applicant files and provide recommendations for committee review/interviews.
- With the AVP, develop and advance a sustained communications outreach strategy to connect students, HBCU/MSI partners and other stakeholders to the VTSI to advance the VTSI mission and goals, including through use of social media and digital applications.
Student Academic Advising, Counseling, Professional and Career Development
- In synergy with graduate program leads and other VTSI staff, provide complementary academic advising, individual counseling and mentorship to VTSI students.
- Coordinating with other JHU resources, develop, implement and support strategies to promote a positive learning environment for all VTSI scholars to ensure their academic and professional success.
- Work with the AVP and other JHU stakeholders to develop a longitudinal leadership and professional development curriculum and experiential life design activities for VTSI scholars, including cultivating relationships, networking, mentorship, sponsorship, and professional and career development opportunities for VTSI scholars with STEM related institutions, as well as JHU alumni and other professionals in STEM-related careers.
- Oversee the design and execution of career and professional development programming (including workshops, program content, and digital resources) and coaching to ensure a positive student experience and advance career trajectories for all VTSI scholars.
- Maintain expertise in the field of professional and career development with a particular emphasis on the needs of students in the STEM training pathway.
- Continually assess and evaluate the professional and career development needs of VTSI scholars and work with other JHU stakeholders in developing strategies to meet these needs.
- Work with the AVP and other JHU stakeholders to design activities to maintain cohesion and community among VTSI scholars.
- Work with the AVP and other JHU stakeholders to develop activities to engage and maintain connection to alumni of VTSI supported initiatives to advance their success and realize VTSI goals.
Program Evaluation & Reporting
- Oversee collection, maintenance, analysis, evaluation, and management of data that will be used in progress reports, presentations and publications to internal and external stakeholders.
- Write reports and prepare presentations for dissemination to relevant VTSI stakeholders as needed.
- Represent the VTSI on committees within the University to advance the mission and goals of the VTSI.
- With the finance and operations manager, and other JHU stakeholders, monitor and develop processes to assess the effectiveness of programs, analyze the results and recommend actions to better achieve desired outcomes.
- Work with the AVP to develop markers of progression of the VTSI cohorts.
- Serve as lead for initiating and maintaining institutional review board requirements for access to, use of and dissemination of data derived from the VTSI.
- With the AVP, develop systems to track participation in VTSI activities.
- Oversee creation and maintenance on a continuous basis of a complete database of students in the VTSI to satisfy reporting requirements.
- Oversee creation and maintenance of a VTSI alumni database and updating of information on all VTSI STEM PhD graduates and other VTSI supported scholars.
- With VTSI staff, coordinate collaborative efforts to create and disseminate an annual and other interim report.
Policies & Procedures
- Assist the AVP, the Office of the Provost and other stakeholders with the development of policies and standard operating procedures for administrative activities of the VTSI.
- Maintain continuous interactions and communication between the VTSI Office and partner institutions to ensure that VTSI operations are effective, coordinated and responsive to the needs of partner institutions.
- Identify and consult with institutions, faculty, administrative staff, students and other constituents to advance the goals of the VTSI and the individuals served.
- Work collaboratively with the AVP, VTSI staff, the Office of the Provost and other stakeholders to plan symposia, meetings, agendas, workshops and programs to ensure that meetings are informative and productive and support the goals and mission of the VTSI.
- Facilitate and, as needed, lead discussions among internal and external stakeholders to secure advice and advance the work of the VTSI and the JHU graduate diversity and inclusion mission.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
*This position will require some work outside of normal business hours and/or weekends and some travel.

Minimum Qualifications
- An earned Ph.D. degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (at least 5 years) working in a higher education setting required.
- Supervisory experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with STEM program leadership in a higher education setting and/or STEM pathway programs.
- Experience working with STEM graduate students.
- Experience with and commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Experience with academic and/or career advising and/or student success initiatives.
- Experience in administering and monitoring financial resources for projects.
- Experience with data analysis.
