We are seeking an Engineering Innovation Operations Manager. The Engineering Innovation Operations Manager will report to the Assistant Dean of Pre-Collegiate Programs in the Whiting School of Engineering's Office of Graduate Education and Lifelong Learning (GELL). The Operations Manager will assist with the implementation and growth of Engineering Innovation online college-level programs (currently Explore Engineering Innovation and Biomedical Engineering Innovation).


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Recruiting and hiring instructional staff.
  • Providing logistical support for the programs.
  • Coordinate the procurement, testing, and distributing of individual and site student lab kits.
  • Developing and administering evaluations of courses and programs.
  • Preparing and monitoring project budgets.
  • Recruiting students - with assistance from WSE marketing staff.
  • Updating the online application in SLATE.
  • Monitoring student enrollment progress to ensure that all students complete the appropriate enrollment forms.
  • The Operations Manager will also assist with the implementation and growth of the traditional, in-person Engineering Innovation Summer Program. These duties include the below.
  • Serving as a site manager for a number of the EI locations.
  • Acting as a liaison for the residential contractor, Summer Discovery.
  • Assisting the new WSE admissions office with recruiting for EI.
  • Reviewing applications and making admission and financial assistance decisions.
  • Monitoring student enrollment progress to ensure that all students complete the appropriate enrollment forms.
  • Working with the JHU Office of the Provost to review state authorization requirements and submit appropriate materials to state licensing boards.
  • Ensuring that Memorandums of Understanding with partner sites are authorized on a timely basis.
  • Taking the lead on complex, cross-departmental or inter-institutional projects to streamline the EI processes as needed.


Online Engineering Innovation Program Operations 35%

  • Run the online programs including Biomedical Engineering Innovation (BMEI) and Explore Engineering Innovation in collaboration with EI leadership
  • Significantly grow enrollment in these programs to 2,500/yr over next 4 years.
  • Hire and set clear expectations for new instructional staff.
  • Keep the EI webpage up to date.
  • Intentionally recruit qualified women and underrepresented minorities.
  • Address any concerns students or parents raise with the course.
  • Keep accurate recruitment, application and enrollment tracking spreadsheets.
  • Develop plan for obtaining and distributing program enrollment documents.
  • Work with External Evaluator to develop an evaluation plan for online programs.
  • Ensure that students in the course receive their lab supplies before they are needed for the course.
  • Provide input to program budget and track expenses.
  • As the scope of the online programs grow, we anticipate that the time dedicated to this work will increase vs time supporting EI summer program. Other duties as assigned.


Engineering Innovation Summer Program Support 40%

  • In collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director of the traditional Engineering Innovation Summer Program for High School students (EI) – likely to be as much as 60% of time spent from April to July.
  • Recruit, admit, and enroll EI students.
  • Process the enrollment forms for EI.
  • Serve as a site manager for one or more of the EI sites.
  • Provide support to events that occur on the Homewood Campus during EI.
  • Career Connections, special Lectures.
  • Residential Check-In Day, spaghetti Bridge Ceremony Day Logistics.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for our External Evaluation Team in preparing the evaluation tools and metrics, in implementing the evaluation protocols, and delivering comments for evaluation revisions.
  • Work with EI partner sites to have MOUs negotiated and signed by December 15th of each year.
  • Work with the Office of the Provost to secure authorization for EI to operate in additional states.


Technical Assistance for Online and Traditional Engineering Innovation Programs 15%

  • Manage the online programs' Blackboard sites and assist with the management of the EI program Blackboard sites.
  • Provide Social Media recruiting, marketing and communications support for both the online and summer EI programs.
  • Ensure fidelity of use of the outreach database.
  • Analyze evaluator's reports and make modifications as needed.
  • Collect data to be able to analyze different outcomes, if any, of women and underrepresented minorities.
  • Make recommendations annually of improvements to SLATE system for application and enrollment process.
  • Test and provide timely feedback on SLATE system changes.


Supervision 5%

  • Hire, train and supervise online instructional staff.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising student workers in the EI Office.
  • Assist in hiring, training, and supervising summer EI instructional staff.


Reporting 5%

  • Prepare and maintain weekly records of student recruiting, application and enrollment data and compare from year to year.
  • Provide data to Director and Assistant Dean as requested.
  • Compile and analyze evaluation results for online programs after each session.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Project management experience.
  • Time management skills, attention to detail and follow through.
  • Budget preparation experience
  • Marketing skills.
  • Social Media/Communications skills.
  • Knowledge of STEM education, professions and benefits thereof.
  • Strong communication (written and oral), organizational, customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with MS Teams, preferred.
  • Experience with Word Press, preferred.
  • Experience with Canvas or similar course management tool, preferred.
  • Experience with Slate or other online application system, preferred.
  • Ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Fair, Confident, Enthusiastic, Personable.




Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years progressively responsible experience in program administration in an academic environment.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
