Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Business Operations Manager, Project MUSE. The Business Manager operates independently, at a high level, and contributes to the core development of new products, business models, and the overall strategy for MUSE. The Business Operations Manager, Project MUSE will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship; the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning; and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.
Daily, this position is responsible for assisting with the fiscal management of Project MUSE ($30M in revenue), and the reporting and distribution of royalties to participating publishers. This position reports to the Associate Director of Project MUSE.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Participates in the development and implementation of strategic initiatives and projects; development includes the origination of new products and revenue streams and associated business systems to support.
- Creates, either solo or in conjunction with leadership, new products and/or programs to support the sale of content to institutions.
- Manages all business operations focusing on efficiency, effectiveness, and continuous improvement of operational processes.
- Manages MUSE budget process.
- Manages financial execution, financial operations, and reporting for about $30 million in top-line revenue, including modeling, budgeting, and royalty distributions. Develops reporting systems that support sound organizational and operating policies.
- Prepares monthly reports and royalty statements
- Reviews and evaluates the financial and cost-benefit analysis associated with strategic initiatives, the financial impact of contracts, major initiatives, pricing scenarios, and outsourcing opportunities.
- Prepares or oversees financial documents and presentations for internal staff and external customers
- Mentors and develops staff, encouraging teamwork and open, transparent communication.
- Represents MUSE at industry conferences which includes presenting to large audiences.
- All other assignments as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
- Five years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
- Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Highly knowledgeable of accounting and budgeting theory and practices.
- Advanced knowledge in the use of financial software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or word processing required. Packages include Microsoft Outlook, Access, Excel, and Word plus JH university-specific accounting & reporting packages. Ability to manage several major activities simultaneously.
- Must possess proven skills and experience in managing the finances of a complex organization, including budget and resource planning, forecasting, financial analysis, and reporting; recruiting, developing, and retaining a high-performing workforce characterized by teamwork and open communication; building a customer service culture; developing effective communication processes and building relationships at all levels of an organization.
- Knowledge of Johns Hopkins University financial practices and policies, preferred.
- Excellent communication skills including extemporaneous speaking abilities in situations representing JHUP.
- Ability to prepare oral and/or written presentations to/for senior and executive management.
- Ability to effectively collaborate with peers, staff, and external customers.
- Ability to prioritize work and ensure projects and workloads are completed on time while maintaining high morale.
- Strong organizational skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
