We are seeking a highly motivated and productive Communications Specialist who will provide editorial support—including reporting, writing, and editing—for a variety of communications tools, with a primary focus on digital properties such as Twitter and blogs.

The Communications Specialist will establish and manage branding and community relations posture, develop and coordinate internal and external digital media communications, as well as communicate with and disseminate information to faculty, students, and engineers from the Galaxy Community (galaxyproject.org).

The ideal candidate is a versatile online content creator who is able to manage concurrent short- and long-term deadlines. Strong writing and editing skills and online experience are required. Interest or, better yet, familiarity with the genomics domain are a huge plus.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains content on The Galaxy Project HUB (galaxyproject.org) on a daily basis with supervision of the PI's. Includes collecting, writing, and posting stories or enhancing stories by adding images, graphics, videos, or other multimedia elements.
  • Compiles regular email for distribution to subscribers of The Hub/Galaxy website and blog.
  • Pitches stories and participates in editorial planning for The Hub/Galaxy website and blog.
  • Assists with the production of special sections and long-term projects.
  • Composes and posts content on social media, primarily Twitter.
  • Researches, writes, and edits content for a variety of marketing collateral, including newsletters, annual reports, websites, and emails.
  • Works with Principal Investigators and Administrators to ensure all editorial is of the highest professional quality and meets project editorial standards
  • Maintains working relationships with communications contacts throughout the Galaxy Community.
  • Understands web metrics and employs data-minded thinking into prioritizing activities and evaluating their effectiveness.
  • The position is responsible for developing and managing programs to foster positive positioning and proactive visibility by working with project partners and collaborators.
  • The Communications Specialist is expected to stay current with technology and media trends and suggest new related activities to the institute/department.
  • Assists with presentations.
  • This position is the point of contact to the public for the Galaxy Community.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong creative writing, editing, and oral communication skills for a variety of applications, especially writing for the web.
  • A solid understanding of search engine optimization, HTML, CSS, and photo selection and editing.
  • Experience with website content management systems.
  • Sound news judgment.
  • Ability to produce content with both speed and accuracy.
  • Must be comfortable and experienced using technology, multimedia, social media, and web metrics tools.
  • Good understanding of multimedia journalism and visual storytelling.
  • Have the ability to organize and package print stories for online publication.
  • Be self-motivated to stay at the forefront of Internet technology, trends, and best practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise professionalism, sensitivity, good judgment, and problem-solving skills.

Starting Salary Range: $44,850-$61,600 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

*JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
