Job Description

Montgomery College (MC) is seeking a well-qualified, innovative, dynamic candidate for the position of Senior Vice President for Advancement and Community Engagement (SVPACE).

Montgomery College is located in Montgomery County, Maryland - a vibrant, diverse, and economically robust community of more than one million people, with immigrants making up about one-third of the population. The county is adjacent to Washington, D.C. and 30 miles south of Baltimore.

The College is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees appointed by the governor of Maryland. Montgomery College serves more than 50,000 credit and noncredit-seeking students on three campuses in Germantown, Rockville, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring. It also includes a collegewide Workforce Development and Continuing Education unit, training centers in Gaithersburg and Wheaton, a central administrative services center, community engagement sites, and other off-campus locations.

Montgomery College is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI). The College is highly visible in the community and enjoys extraordinary support from the Montgomery County government; local representatives of state government; educational, business, and civic leaders; its two foundations; alumni; and the general community.

Reporting directly to President Jermaine F. Williams and serving as a member of the President's cabinet, the SVPACE is the senior-most person who is broadly responsible for all advancement operations at Montgomery College, including Alumni Relations, Communications (consisting of Creative Services, Marketing, Media Relations, Photography, and MCTV), Community Engagement, Grants and Sponsored Programs, and Special Events. The position oversees the Montgomery College Foundation, a 501(c)(3) philanthropic foundation; and, in joint leadership, the Montgomery College Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College (PIC MC) Foundation, a 509(a)(3) educational foundation.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the College's communications strategies and activities to ensure the best possible image of the institution, College leadership, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ensuring achievement of private funding, community relations, and enrollment management goals.
  • Leading and implementing the College's Community Engagement initiatives in concert with institutional goals and the strategic plan.
  • Leading and implementing public grants efforts in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Overseeing collegewide Special Events.
  • Supervising the Alumni Relations staff in the development and implementation of comprehensive alumni relations and engagement programs, with over 100,000 active alumni.

Professional qualifications for this position include:

  • A Master's degree in any closely related field; doctorate is preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressive leadership and supervisory experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience with a focus on major gifts of $100k or more
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience working at a college or university; experience with community colleges is preferred
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience with foundation management or foundation board experience; community relations and public relations experience is preferred

The successful candidate for the SVPACE position will be an experienced and compassionate leader who has expertise in maintaining and strengthening internal and external relationships with individuals and constituencies in support of the College while also handling multiple College priorities. The SVPACE will coordinate strategic and tactical plans across the advancement units and three volunteer boards, and create synergies among the plans, as well as supporting the professional development of the Office of Advancement and Community Engagement workforce, and ensuring the financial integrity, well-being, and reliability of advancement operations.

The SVPACE must be committed to the principles of servant leadership, the community college mission, equity and inclusion, teamwork, and participatory governance, and possess the characteristics of sound judgment, flexibility, creativity, openness, integrity, resourcefulness, and humility. The successful candidate will have a high level of emotional intelligence and a willingness to engage in productive conflict, by contributing to spaces that create psychological safety and drive positive organizational outcomes.
