The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). As the nation's oldest and one of its most prestigious research universities, JHU offers high-quality master's degrees and post-baccalaureate education in three locations: the Washington, DC Center, the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD, and online. AAP enrolls over 6,000 students each academic year in over 45 programs.
AAP was started in 1992 to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in a professional and part-time graduate program. Over the course of nearly 30 years, AAP has worked diligently to add new degree programs that fit within the academic structure of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences to satisfy the demands of the marketplace. AAP distinguishes itself through its intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and more than 60 dedicated full-time faculty. Position Description
The Johns Hopkins University invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator for the Master of Arts in Communication in the Advanced Academic Programs, a division of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Reporting to the Program Director for Communication, the Program Coordinator will contribute to the excellence of the program and will demonstrate and support ongoing innovation in the curriculum. AAP's Communication program has been one of the leading professional master's programs in the field since its inception in 2001, and it is designed for the workplace of today: a cutting-edge curriculum that integrates writing, research, technology, and strategy. With an ever-growing and diverse student body, the program is continually expanding and enhancing its course offerings to meet both academic and practitioner needs. Currently, the program serves nearly 400 students, 80% of whom take courses online and with a strong international population of students who also take courses on-site.
In both academic and administrative roles, the Program Coordinator supports the curriculum, students, and adjunct faculty. The Program Coordinator will have significant interaction/collaboration with the Program Director, Associate Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and other Program Coordinators within the Communication program, as well as across other AAP programs.?
The Program Coordinator is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, commensurate with experience. The Program Coordinator reports to the Program Director for Communication, who consults with the Program Chair on academic matters, and to the Associate Dean for Graduate & Professional Programs, who leads the Advanced Academic Programs and reports to the Dean of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. The Program Coordinator will have the following academic and administrative responsibilities:
Academic Responsibilities
- Teaching 6 graduate courses per year, including preparation and time spent in the classroom (online and onsite in Washington, DC)
- Advising students from diverse backgrounds
- Providing innovative leadership for curriculum design and new course development to ensure the delivery and growth of the programs
- University service
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist with the management of degree concentrations or areas of focus
- Assist the Program Director with administrative tasks, such as planning events or reviewing admission materials
- Other administrative duties as assigned
Qualifications
The Program Coordinator role is critical to maintaining the overall high quality of this program. The Coordinator must have a passion for education and its power to change lives, especially for international, part-time, and non-residential students. A track record of successful graduate and/or online teaching, as well as skills in instructional design, content development, and instructional technology, are important. Candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds are of particular interest.
To be considered, candidates should meet a set of minimum qualifications and ideally meet several additional preferred qualifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Communication or in a relevant field with specialization in one or more of the following:
- Corporate communication
- Marketing and advertising
- Organizational communication
- Strategic communication
- 1-3 years of higher education teaching experience in person, online and/or at the graduate level
- 1-3 years of work experience within communication fields, including but not limited to outside consulting or collaborative work within private, non-profit, and governmental organizations
- The ability to teach a variety of courses in the Communication field
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Terminal Degree in Communication with a specialization in one or more of the following:
- Corporate communication
- Marketing and advertising
- Organizational communication
- Strategic communication
- 4 or more years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
- 4 or more years of related professional experience within communication fields, including but not limited to outside consulting or collaborative work within private, non-profit, and governmental organizations
- Experience managing a degree or certificate program
- Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design
- The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines in both on-site and online environments
