We are seeking an Online Media Specialist who will work primarily with colleagues in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as the Center for Language and Speech Processing within the Whiting School of Engineering, to implement digital media strategies for both the Department and Center, and in tandem with the broader School. The Online Media Specialist will serve as a multi-platform content producer to support, manage, and develop the Department's and Center's online presence. This includes day-to-day management of the primary websites and social media accounts and other accounts as needed.


The primary focus of this position is development and maintenance of academic and research web sites, and social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. There are certainly opportunities to expand into additional platforms as well. This position reports to the Administrator, is accountable to the Department Head and is part of the larger Communications and Marketing team within the Whiting School of Engineering, which also includes editorial, design, web, and audience engagement teams.


The Online Media Specialist will support the conceptualization and execution of creative, high-quality content for both organic and paid outreach on websites and social networks. The ideal candidate will have experience producing engaging content, website design and maintenance, and some experience with paid social media marketing. Experience in any field of engineering could be beneficial but is not required.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Content Development, Paid Advertising & Analytics

  • Produce content for—and oversee day-to-day programming on—the Department's and Center's primary websites and social media accounts, with occasional responsibilities related to accounts for individual research and educational initiatives coming from the individual faculty.
  • Maintain an awareness of developments in the field of electrical and computer engineering, and also major events around the School, in order to inform content and the Department and School's social media programming calendar.
  • Help grow subscription products such as email newsletters and help promote major events.
  • Work with student groups and the Whiting School admissions team to develop social media content representative of Electrical and Computer Engineering student experience.
  • Maintain a distinct voice and tone for the Department's primary website and social media accounts.
  • Brainstorm engaging campaigns to reach diverse audiences including but not limited to: prospective and current students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, media, affiliated and unaffiliated friends, advocates, sponsors, partners and supporters of the Department and school overall.
  • Utilize self-serve dashboards and other analytics tools to develop reports as needed for use in meetings, proposals, etc. and also to occasionally share out best practices to colleagues and stakeholders throughout the Department.


Partnerships, Collaborations & Misc. Responsibilities

  • Monitor public mentions of the Department, Center, and other relevant mentions across social media.
  • Assist with management of vendor relationships, including but not limited to social media, video, market research and metrics analysis.
  • Evaluate emerging social media platforms and envision ways they could be used effectively.
  • Help support faculty throughout the Department and Center by advising and guiding them on appropriate website and social media content and strategies.
  • Maintain the weekly departmental newsletter collating and condensing broad university announcements into an easily digestible format for faculty, staff, and student members of the Department.
  • Assist with crisis communications as needed.


Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to pull metrics for post-performance and interpret them.
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics and Google Ads.
  • Early adopter of new media, social trends, and technology.
  • Desire to grow and be challenged within a team.
  • Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including social media posts, short pieces for the web, and marketing copy.
  • An eye for design, and some experience with design software, i.e., Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva, etc.
  • Basic familiarity with social media management platforms and analytics reporting, e.g., Facebook Insights.
  • Creativity and confidence to pitch new ideas.

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Work experience can be through employment and/or internship.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in fine arts, graphic design, computer science or other related field.
  • Two years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Four years' experience in web design, marketing or communications roles and demonstrated reliability in a communications environment.
  • Proven experience developing original web and social media content on behalf of a brand or organization.
  • Programming (including web), or marketing, or communications background in higher education, engineering, science, or journalism.
  • Experience or interest in engineering or higher education.
  • Past work in video production and/or web design.
  • Experience with content production for social media, search, web, video, etc.
