We are seeking an Assistant Director of the Preparatory who is responsible for the strategic development and oversight of Peabody Preparatory's applied music instructional area and supports the advancement of the Preparatory' s educational programing. As a member of the key leadership team for the Preparatory, he or she will support the Director of the Preparatory in executing the strategic educational vision and future innovation for the Preparatory through maintaining the tradition of excellence for which Peabody Preparatory and the Peabody Institute is well known.


This role provides oversight 2,500 students providing a comprehensive music educational experience of both private and group instruction to students with a broad range of abilities, backgrounds, and ages; and provides oversight and supervision to all applied instructional departments and program and 130 faculty members.


The Organization

Founded in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory of the Johns Hopkins University is Baltimore's premier community school and pre-professional academy for the performing arts. The Peabody Preparatory is part of the Peabody Institute, one of the nine divisions that comprises the Johns Hopkins University. The Preparatory has a distinguished faculty of 130 educators and serves approximately 2,500 students per week on four campuses. The Preparatory offers music and dance educational experiences ranging from early childhood classes for infants to life-long learners engaged through Peabody Plus. The dance department, dating from 1914, is one of the oldest continuously operating dance training centers in the United States.


Students can enroll in individual lessons where they can participate in repertoire classes, recitals, and competitions. Group instruction is available in dance, large ensembles, chorus, chamber music, early childhood music classes, vocal fundamentals, and music theory. In addition, the Preparatory offers more structured curricula for our most serious student through the Preparatory's academy, certificate, and pre-professional training programs.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Faculty

  • Mentor, supervise, and manage applied and program department chairs
  • Supervise and manage faculty evaluation program
  • Work with the Director of the Preparatory and HR on hiring plan for applied instruction
  • Oversee all area hiring committees to ensure JHU hiring policies and procedures are followed. Prepare candidate lists for the Director of the Preparatory for approval.
  • Mentor and supervise onboarding of all new applied department chairs
  • Supported by the Director of the Preparatory and JHU, as needed, manage and work to resolve any area faculty issues that may develop throughout the year
  • Coordinate chair meetings, events, and professional development opportunities


Curriculum

  • Supervise and oversee the creation and revision, as needed, of department specific curriculum to ensure a comprehensive educational strategy within each department
  • Oversee certificate exam programs


Students & Families

  • Working with the Director of the Preparatory, campus staff, and marketing, create a comprehensive marketing strategy for student recruitment and retention
  • Working with the Preparatory Education Manager and marketing, oversees the creation of content for course catalog, area publications, and web pages serving as approver for all classes, and courses offered within each area
  • Oversee new student placement process and new family education
  • Attend and support, as needed, events, recitals, and master classes
  • Supported by the Director of the Preparatory and JHU, as needed, manage and work to resolve any area student or parent issues that may develop throughout the year


Administration

  • Work with Director of the Preparatory and campuses on strategic plans for departmental expansion
  • Work with Director of the Preparatory on developing and implementing business plans for expansion for Preparatory new lines of business including Peabody Plus for Adults, Peabody Pro for professional artists, and Peabody Prescribe for Arts in Health.
  • Work with Director of the Preparatory on Peabody Preparatory's tuition assistance program
  • Work with the Preparatory Education Manager on coordinating schoolwide competitions and recitals and oversee area event scheduling to ensure departments are equally represented and have access to hall space
  • Responsible for securing staff, judges, and faculty support for these events which require a thorough understanding of the educational mission and program goals and content
  • Working collaboratively with the Business Office, monitor enrollments and class details in ASAP, Peabody's online registration system
  • Working with the Business Office and Department Chairs, determine course of action for under enrolled classes
  • Working with Preparatory Education Manager and Conservatory Concert Office, plan and oversee the rehearsal and performance calendar
  • Working with Preparatory Education Manager to hire Preparatory student workers to support Preparatory operations including Saturdays, special events, and departmental needs
  • Approve tour, or additional external performances beyond the regular season
  • Serve on Peabody Preparatory's leadership team


Budget

  • Working with Director of the Preparatory and Business Office, oversee departmental budgets


Schedule

  • 8:30 am – 5 pm (Monday – Friday)
  • 8:30 am – 5 pm (Tuesday – Saturday) once a month during the school year 
  • Some evenings and weekends are also required according to the concert schedule


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's in Education or specific field related to program
  • Five years experience in all aspects of academic program administration or program/project experience in a related field
  • Additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's in Music or Music Education, or Arts or Business Administration
  • Five years experience in all aspects of academic program administration
  • Candidate should have strong administrative experience and supervisory experience in a music institution
  • Community music school experience preferred
  • Preferred experience with ASAP, SAP, Arts Vision, Slate, and Salesforce


Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Be committed to mentoring faculty, and teaching students of all ages with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds in private and group class settings
  • Ability to work collegially but independently
  • Ability to multi-task and think strategically
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills
  • Possess a high comfort level with technology ideally with extensive experience with Microsoft Office Suite products; online database management systems experience preferred

This position is 100% onsite and must be worked in Baltimore, MD.
