The Center for Communication Programs is seeking an Editor who serves as an information specialist in a variety of global health areas (e.g., family planning, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and cross-cutting areas such as service delivery and health systems) and brings that expertise to scientific and promotional editing and writing. The Editor will copyedit and help produce the Global Health: Science and Practice Journal, including preparing manuscripts and associated files for publication in coordination with authors, editors, and external companies. The Editor will also provide editing support to other KM Unit programs as needed. The Editor will be supervised by the Scientific Editor.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Copyedit and proofread manuscripts on a wide variety of global health topics submitted to the journal.
- Work closely and communicate with authors to ensure scientific accuracy, clarify meaning, eliminate redundant information, condense verbose text, reformat tables and figures, and improve readability, particularly for audiences whom English is not their native language.
- Ensure accurate spelling, syntax, grammar, and punctuation and adherence to house style.
- Help the Scientific Editor manage the production process from manuscript acceptance to final publication including communication with editors, authors, graphic artists, and consultants or contractors including editors, composition vendor, and web host vendor.
- Help the Scientific Editor manage editorial calendars, including scheduling and monitoring progress of deadlines to ensure timely and successful publication of quarterly issues.
- Participate in weekly meetings with the full editorial team, weekly meetings with the Managing Editor, and meetings as needed with vendors and KM Unit teams.
- Work with the Scientific Editor and Managing Editor to develop and implement policies, procedures, and practices related to submission and editing, as well as mechanisms to ensure timely publication of accepted articles and to expand the journal's reach and interactivity.
- Assist with producing and maintaining guidelines for authors preparing and submitting manuscripts; guidelines for peer reviewers submitting reviews of manuscripts; and style guide and copyediting and proofreading checklists.
- Help prepare social media kits for each issue and promote the journal via social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
- Help implement activities to improve access to and use of journal content. Explore new technological advances to further promote the journal and increase reach.
- Contribute to annual work plans, budgets, and monitoring and evaluation reports for the journal.
- Contribute to development of surveys and other mechanisms intended to measure the usability, effectiveness, and impact of the journal.
- Perform job duties/responsibilities in support of CCP's mission and values.
- Keep abreast of federal, state, and local law, as well as JHU policies, as they apply to the job duties and responsibilities.
- Travel domestically as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Bachelor's Degree.
- 5 years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe.
* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree (MA, MHS, MPH) or equivalent.
- At least seven (7) years of experience.
- Familiarity with Aries Editorial Manager and/or Production Manager.
- Language proficiency in French or Spanish.
- Familiarity with technology platforms for knowledge management such OneDrive, AirTable, and Google Docs.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Technical knowledge of one of more global health areas such as family planning and reproductive health, maternal and child health, and communicable diseases such as HIV or TB.
- Demonstrated management and organizational skills.
- Ability to take direction, work independently, and also be a team player.
