The Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is currently recruiting a Communications Associate who will set reputation and recruitment goals for the department and plan, design, and implement communications and marketing strategy and efforts to accomplish these goals. This role will oversee and execute strategic projects from conception to reality and will define and report on metrics to measure progress and determine ROI of these efforts.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities: 

The Marketing and Communications Associate will work collaboratively with the biomedical engineering department's leadership to set marketing and recruitment goals; oversee all marketing, print, and electronic communications for the department; develop and manage programs to foster positive positioning and promote brand visibility; and lead recruitment marketing efforts for the BME academic programs. The Marketing and Communications Associate will:

  • Work with departmental leadership to develop an annual budget for marketing and recruitment activities, and manage and report on this budget
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan to promote visibility and awareness of the biomedical engineering department, BME faculty, and BME students to internal and external audiences, including current and prospective students, alumni, faculty, clinical and industry partners, sponsors, peer institutions, and the general public.
  • The Marketing and Communications Associate will be responsible for promoting the BME department's programs, research, significant initiatives, accomplishments, and events through written and other forms of communication across a variety of platforms including print, digital, and social media outlets.
  • Working with departmental leadership and faculty, the Marketing and Communications Associate will target and market potential research and other news stories, serving as a subject matter expert in multiple communication vehicles.
  • Oversee the BME department's paid and organic media and communications efforts and create a communications calendar by identifying programs, events, or research for promotion with natural tie-in opportunities
  • Provide recommendations and consultation related to the development of communications for major publications and significant programs or initiatives
  • Oversee the strategic development, writing, and production of a wide variety of communication vehicles, including marketing materials, newsletters, publications, and more. The Marketing and Communications Associate will work proactively with departmental leadership, faculty, students, and staff to develop, write, and design content—including text, audio, and video—for web and other platforms.
  • Develop and implement goals and strategies to maintain the BME department's web and social media presence.
  • Develop and execute a calendar of communications, events, and other activities to support recruitment goals in collaboration with academic program leadership and staff.
  • Oversee strategy and logistics for BME events and departmental participation in external conferences and other events to support reputation and recruitment goals.
  • Develop meaningful metrics to evaluate and measure progress towards goals and specific targets, and use these metrics to develop regular reports for BME leadership.
  • Liaise with peers in the School of Medicine, Whiting School of Engineering, and Central JHU communications offices to align goals with those of the schools and university.
  • Ensure consistency of voice and message across all BME communications, including adherence to brand, use of name, and messaging guidelines.
  • Oversee hiring and supervision of staff and/or student workers in support of BME marketing and communications efforts.
  • Oversee all work with external consultants related to BME marketing and communications efforts, including managing the RFP and vendor hiring process and ensuring that all university purchasing and other policies are followed.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory): 

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Four years related experience.
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.* 

 

*  JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

 

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Communications, Media Relations, Public Relations, Business, or related field
  • Demonstrated writing ability – writing samples and examples of communications or strategic plans are encouraged, and a writing test will be part of the interview process.
  • Prior work experience in higher education, life science, engineering, or health-related sectors.
  • Project management and supervisory experience.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to translate complex research or scientific data into materials for lay audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders, departmental leadership, and institutional staff to identify, assess, and meet diverse stakeholder needs.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to adjust to multiple demands.
  • Ability to organize workflow, prioritize and manage multiple projects with minimal direction, meet deadlines, think critically and creatively, and exercise sound judgement.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated success implementing new initiatives.
  • Proficient in WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, Illustrator), Google Analytics, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), MailChimp, Canva, social media and digital marketing platforms and analytics tools.

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Not finalized but most likely a minimum a Writer and a Communications Specialist.

Starting Salary Range: $61,070 - $83,900 - $106,710 annually (Commensurate with experience)
