POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Investment Officer is a key member of the Investment Team working in a small and cohesive team environment.  In this role, the Senior Investment Officer will collaborate with the Chief Investment Officer on all aspects of portfolio management, including the sourcing, selection and monitoring of investment managers for the portfolio, performing investment research, conducting portfolio and performance analysis, preparing written investment recommendations for the Board of Directors, and presenting and advocating for those investment recommendations at the Board of Directors meetings.  While the portfolio is well diversified across asset classes, an investment advisor leads the manager sourcing and monitoring for the public investments (public equity and hedge funds) so, in this role, private markets are the primary focus.  Atapco is committed to incorporating Environmental, Social and Governance factors into its investment decision making and working with investment managers who are committed to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the oversight of the entire investment portfolio.   Perform research and analysis to understand industry trends and inform decisions about investment strategy and portfolio construction.
  • Be an expert on matters related to investments across private markets (buyout, growth equity, venture, secondaries, and other).  Monitor developments in the private equity market, including investment trends and regulatory changes.  Attend industry events.  Develop and maintain key relationships with the external investment community (e.g., fund managers, peer investors, and key placement agents) to expand knowledge regarding emerging investment opportunities and top performing investment managers and strategies.   Conduct research to develop and monitor investment themes.  Compile market maps, overviews, and assessments of potential private markets managers.  Develop and maintain forward calendar of new private equity funds by existing and targeted managers.
  • Source, evaluate and recommend potential private equity investments, examining team, strategy, process, performance, terms, and other areas of consideration.  Conduct extensive due diligence, prepare formal written recommendations for the Board of Directors, coordinate legal review and subscription process.  Onboard new managers and ensure documentation is maintained in appropriate files and databases.
  • Monitor private markets portfolio, including valuations, capital calls, distributions, unfunded commitments, expected capital calls and expected distributions, organizational changes at the fund managers, and significant events related to large portfolio holdings.  Recommend actions as appropriate.  Obtain uncalled capital contribution and distribution forecasts and potential scenarios from fund managers.
  • Manage the private equity co-investment portfolio. Analyze co-investment opportunities and make recommendations to Senior Management.
  • Analyze and synthesize data relating to performance (absolute and vis-à-vis benchmarks) and exposures of individual managers, asset classes, and the overall portfolio and articulate key findings and trends.  Prepare periodic reporting, portfolio reviews and other ad hoc requests.
  • Gather and summarize information as needed to support the annual audit.
  • Participate in the planning and preparation of the quarterly Investment Committee meetings. Attend and prepare minutes.
  • Evaluate and implement investment tools and resources used in connection with investment sourcing, diligence, monitoring, and portfolio management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MBA in finance, CFA, and/or CAIA preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of work experience, with at least five years at a sophisticated family office, endowment, foundation, pension fund, or OCIO, analyzing and monitoring private market fund investments.
  • Strong knowledge of finance and investment concepts.
  • Extensive knowledge of managers and strategies across private market strategies, regions, and sectors.
  • Broad network of investment professionals and strong relationship building skills.
  • Strong investment acumen.
  • Experience working with Environmental, Social and Governance principles preferred.
  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • Exceptional analytical and investigative skills, with a keen, skeptical eye.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to think critically.
  • Strong orientation to detail and accuracy and excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter, multi-task, and work well both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Hard working with high quality standards.
  • The highest standards of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with Private i preferred.

About American Trading and Production Corporation
COMPANY OVERVIEW: Louis Blaustein and his 18-year-old son, Jacob, founded the American Oil Company (Amoco) in 1910, and it later grew into one of America’s largest and most innovative oil companies. American Oil merged with Standard Oil of Indiana in 1954, and the company later changed its name in 1985 to Amoco Corporation. Jacob Blaustein also made a name for himself as a passionate human rights and civic service advocate. Atapco was formed in 1931 to consolidate, expand, and diversify the Blaustein family's business activities, later to include manufacturing and distribution, marine transportation, oil & gas, and real estate. Regarding real estate, the family built the Blaustein Building in downtown Baltimore in 1961, which served as the Atapco headquarters until 2001, and was one of the key developments that sparked the renaissance of Baltimore in the early 1960s. At the end of 1998, the company completed a tax-free reorganization, splitting into three separate and unrelated companies. Atapco today represents the interests of the Hirschhorn and Roswell branches of the descendants of Louis Blaustein. (The other entities created were Lord Baltimore Capital Corporation and ...Rosemore, Inc., representing other branches of the family). Today, Atapco’s operating business interest is the acquisition, development, and operation of high-quality commercial real estate properties. Atapco also has a diverse and sophisticated investment portfolio, as well as a family office (Atapco Financial Services) that oversees foundation, trust, and individual family member portfolios. The firm is built on a foundation of commitment to quality, integrity, excellence, and dedication to community—attributes important to Louis and Jacob Blaustein and carried on by the firm today. The Atapco Investment Portfolio is governed by the Board of Directors and the Investment Committee of the Board of Directors. The primary objective is to preserve and grow the significant capital base at acceptable levels of risk, while mitigating risk through portfolio construction and rigorous due diligence. Atapco invests across a globally diversified pool of asset classes and employs many of the world’s most successful investment managers for security selection of public and private equities, and absolute return strategies.
