CIHEB Communication Specialist (Media and Public Relations Specialist) - (220000MN)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV), Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB) is seeking a full-time communications specialist (CS) to join our international public health team in Baltimore. Successful applicants will possess excellent written and visual communications skills, demonstrate careful attention to detail, and possess an aptitude for learning new technical material. We seek a multitalented individual who is able to digest complex material on public health topics and create compelling communications products.

Tasks are performed in support of CIHEB's global mission and to promote CIHEB's international project activities. The CS will work under the supervision of the communications director in Baltimore, Maryland.
About CIHEB:

The Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB) is part of the Institute of Human Virology and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. CIHEB is comprised of a global team of more than 700 personnel in eight countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. CIHEB helps provide care and treatment to hundreds of thousands of HIV patients, trains and educates health workers, builds human capital in the area of new business development and communications, conducts evaluation studies, and implements evidence-based interventions and research studies in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia.

Primary Duties:
  • Create public informational materials to target audiences for business unit communications, including multimedia content for use on the web and social media sites.
  • Develops, writes, and edits press releases and other communications materials.
  • Contributes to production and distribution of public informational materials to a target audience using social and multi-media, such as e-newsletters, publication, website content, and magazine.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree, such as English, fine arts, marketing, communications, etc.

Experience: Two (2) years of related communications, marketing, media, public or client relations experience. Fluent in French a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Facility in composing succinct, clear, and engaging messages and written materials (including impact stories, news posts, press releases, etc.) on highly technical health-related topics.
  • Knowledge of photography and graphic design with a demonstrated ability to edit photographs and match visual material to complement written text.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Working knowledge of SharePoint is a plus.
  • Skill in managing social media accounts.
  • Understanding of international development and health challenges in the African context.
  • Good project management skills.
  • Ability to foster productive relationships with other offices within and external to the organization.
  • Fluency in design best practices across a wide range of deliverable type.
  • Works to create compelling images (infographics) that could be used for presentations, reports, stakeholder outreach, etc.
