Hopkins Athletics and Recreation is a multidivisional Department with 22 programs competing at the NCAA DIII level and two programs (men's and women's lacrosse) competing at the NCAA Division I level (BIG 10 Conference). The department also hosts a variety of robust recreational activities such as club sports, intramurals, outdoor adventures, and fitness programming.
In the summer of 2021, the Department completed a $27 million dollar renovation and expansion of the Ralph S. O'Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being. This facility featured all new state-of-the-art equipment for strength and cardiovascular training, expanded group exercise offerings, and well-being programming. The focus is on fostering holistic student health and a community of care.
The Department of Athletics and Recreation seeks an innovative and forward-thinking Assistant Director of Fitness beginning in July 2022. This role must lead within the framework of a best-in-class recreation program at Johns Hopkins University. Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage the O'Connor Recreation Center's fitness areas, including the fitness room, weight room, stretch areas, Jungle Gym, F45 franchise, and two multi-purpose studios.
- Manage the day-to-day operations via policies, programming, and staffing for personal training and group fitness & wellbeing programs.
- Specify, purchase, inventory, and manage the preventative maintenance of all fitness equipment for recreational facilities.
- Create, facilitate, and oversee the drop-in group fitness and wellbeing class schedule.
- Manage personal training services and special events.
- Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate group fitness and wellbeing class instructors, class monitors, personal trainers, and other applicable student staff and independent contractors.
- Implement and instruct in-service training, workshops, and certification opportunities for personal trainers & group fitness and wellbeing instructors.
- Collaborate with the university community on overlapping health and/or student experience areas, including committees and programs such as the Wellness Work Group and various campus Health and Wellness collaborative programming such as First Year Orientation, and advise relevant student groups such as the Lifestyle Fitness Club and/or Powerlifting Club.
- Market programs effectively to diverse student populations using social media, website, and other direct resources and methods.
- Assess and solve risk management issues in fitness programs and equipment.
- Instruct multiple genres of group fitness classes (i.e. Yoga, Kickboxing, Spinning, Pilates, etc.).
- Ability to implement dynamic and motivating fitness programming.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Bachelor's Degree required.
- Three years professional experience managing a collegiate recreational fitness program required.
- Two-year Graduate Assistantship in Fitness or related fields will be considered as 1-year professional experience.
- Masters in exercise science or related field is preferred.
- Experience in personal training and managing a personal fitness training program.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Nationally accredited personal training certification with a second certification in group fitness instruction preferred.
- Current CPR/AED, First Aid certification Preferred.
Key Relationships:
- Directly supervised by the Associate Director, Recreation.
- This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.
Physical Requirements:
- Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and occasional lifting is required.
- Computer usage involving repetitive and/wrist motion is required.
- Position involves sitting, movement, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds in coaching and training situations.
Working Conditions:
- The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by a supervisor.
