The Advanced Academic Programs division in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins University seeks an experienced and dynamic Assistant Director of Marketing  to develop strategies and tactics that enhance the brand, increase lead generation – domestically and internationally, deliver a positive student experience, and maintain a cohesive presentation of each program in the AAP portfolio. Each year, AAP enrolls over 6,000 graduate professional students, both part-time and full-time, in more than 45 distinctive professional graduate degrees, post-baccalaureate certificates, and non-credit courses. Over 77% of AAP's enrollments are through the online programs, otherwise classes occur on campus, either in Washington, D.C., or Baltimore. The AAP Marketing and Communications team is also responsible for a significant summer and intersession portfolio of courses and programs offered at the pre-college and undergraduate level. Each year, the Office of Summer and Intersession Programs enrolls more than 4,000 students.

 

The Marketing and Communications team within AAP seeks to implement a vision that integrates and re-positions all marketing initiatives to highlight the value of its offerings and the success of its students. Under the direction of the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Director of Marketing joins our team of professionals dedicated to supporting new student recruitment, program marketing, and strategic reinforcement of the JHU-AAP brand. The position works closely with the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, the AAP Marketing Communications team, and external marketing partners in achieving the division's marketing objectives. The position is responsible for managing, planning, designing, and implementing targeted marketing strategies, recruitment collateral, integration across our digital environments, and collaboration between external and internal departments.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Marketing (50%)

  • Aid in the creation, implementation, measurement, refinement, and success of:
    • The comprehensive marketing, communications, public relations, and events' efforts that will enhance AAP program image and position, drive inquiries, and facilitate internal and external communications
    • All marketing, communications, and events' activities and materials including publications, electronic media, media relations, and web development
  • Ensure articulation of AAP desired image and position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout AAP, and assure communication of image and position to all constituencies, both internal and external
  • Aid in the development of editorial direction, design, production, and distribution of all AAP materials. This includes advertisements, websites, and other publications as appropriate
  • Guide AAP electronic media efforts including social media and website development
  • Coordinate and grow media interest in AAP, its programs, and its faculty, and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests.
  • Develop, coordinate, manage, and oversee training, technical support, and resource materials to assist internal and external constituents understand proper marketing etiquette and processes
  • Aids in the management of relationships and measures the effectiveness of our contractors involved in web development, content creation, graphic design, online marketing, advertising placement, etc.
  • Use innovative marketing strategies to build relationships, enhance program reputation, and strengthen the Johns Hopkins brand
  • Develop and assess measurable goals and objectives that advance the strategic mission of the Advanced Academic Programs division as well as marketing objectives
  • Aid in planning and conducting market research

 

Planning & Reporting (20%)

  • Contributes to the achievement of the marketing/communication/public relations mission, goals, and financial objectives
  • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress and forecasting to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications
  • Develop per-program short- and long-term plans for the marketing/communication/ public relations program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence, and evaluate performance
  • Work closely with the department of admissions, recommend short- and long-term marketing campaigns that will meet or exceed enrollment goals and objectives to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications
  • Help formulate and administer policies to ensure the quality and integrity of Johns Hopkins brand

 

Performance Management (15%)

  • Manage a full-time Marketing Coordinator, full-time Communications Manager, part-time Marketing Professionals, and part-time Graduate Student Workers
  • Coordinate web development with the full-time Web Manager
  • Coordinate social media efforts with the full-time Social Media Manager
  • Coordinate online and in-person event promotion with the full-time events manager
  • Manage relationship with outside vendors hired for various projects (e.g. external/freelance graphic designers, web developers, programmers, printers, media placement firms)
  • Conduct annual reviews
  • Staff development
  • Provide ongoing feedback and constructive criticism
  • Prioritize and direct work efforts, providing guidance and direction
  • Conflict resolution
  • Motivate for higher collaboration and performance
  • Conduct interviews and make recommendations for hire

 

Public Relations (10%)

  • Aid in the management of public relations efforts, working with the AAP Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and Johns Hopkins University Public Relations and Communication Offices to build the JHU brand and convey important messages to our customers
  • Serve as a communications advisor for AAP

 

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Four years related experience
  • Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula*

 

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours)  may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. 

 

** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Marketing, Communication, or related field
  • Five or more years of previous higher-education experience, or other service-oriented industry, highly desired

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Working knowledge of Google Analytics, channel marketing, forecasting, and marketing analytics
  • Working knowledge of CRMs like Slate and email marketing platforms like Constant Contact
  • Working knowledge of WordPress, HTML, and Siteimprove 
  • Must possess an understanding of higher education marketing principles
  • Able to manage project deadlines and deliverables and multitask on a variety of projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Able to interact effectively with and direct external vendors
  • Able to coordinate regular ongoing electronic and in-person marketing activities
  • Able to formulate new strategies, and work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated expertise in e-marketing, social media, mobile device, and the new media communication environments
