Position Details:
Loyola University Maryland is a Jesuit, Catholic university committed to the educational and spiritual traditions of the Society of Jesus and to the ideals of liberal education and the development of the whole person. Accordingly, Loyola inspires students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world. Loyola's beautiful, historic Evergreen campus is located in Baltimore, and its graduate centers are in Timonium and Columbia. Loyola enrolls 4,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate students across the Sellinger School of Business and Management, the School of Education, and Loyola College of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1852, Loyola is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States and the first to bear the name of Saint Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus.
About the Opportunity
Messina, Loyola's living-learning program, is a unique first‐year, undergraduate, student experience designed to help students adjust quickly to college‐level work and to forge a clear path to success at Loyola and beyond. By naming the program Messina, Loyola sets the tone of the hallmark Jesuit commitment to academic excellence and to the development of the whole person. From their first days on campus, students are connected to a support network that challenges them to think critically; discover their talents; connect their passions and gifts to the needs of the campus, local, and global communities; and learn, lead, and serve in a diverse and changing world. Each student experiences a small seminar‐style class of about 16 students in both the fall and spring semesters of the first year. Professors teaching the fall and spring seminar courses collaborate with one another and with a professional campus administrator and a student peer leader to provide continuity in course themes and student learning. One of the Messina instructors also serves as the students' core advisor, thus integrating the instructor/advisor roles. The paired seminars fit a theme that invites interdisciplinary conversations between those courses and provides connections to the other professors and students participating in the theme.
