The Johns Hopkins University seeks a visionary leader for its Master of Science invites nominations and applications for the position of Program Director for the Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Policy and the Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems, within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences' Advanced Academic Programs Division. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate & Professional Programs, the Program Director will sustain the excellence of the program, will foster and lead ongoing innovation in the curriculum, and will pursue efficiency and excellence in support of the program's faculty and students. The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU).?As the nation's oldest and one of its most prestigious research universities, JHU offers high-quality master's degrees and post-baccalaureate education to students online, at its Washington, DC Center,?and at the Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD.?AAP enrolls more than 6,000 students each academic year in over 45-degree programs.? ??
AAP began in 1992 to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in a professional and part-time graduate program. Over the course of nearly 30 years, AAP has worked diligently to add new degree programs that fit within the academic structure of the Krieger School and satisfy the demands of the marketplace. AAP distinguishes itself through its intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and dedicated full-time faculty. Tenured Krieger School faculty members serve as Program Chairs to AAP programs and work together in the Council of Program Chairs, an academic advisory body to the Krieger School Dean.?

?The Position?
The Program Director oversees the curriculum, students, and faculty and must be an entrepreneurial and visionary leader who can embrace the latest technology, science, and policy trends in the field and deliver that experience to the students. In this collaborative role, the Program Director will work closely with the MS in Energy and Climate Program Director and the full-time and adjunct faculty to manage faculty and curriculum. In addition, the Program Director will work closely with the Program Director of the MS in Geospatial Intelligence on curriculum and student course needs.? The ESP program enrolls 274 students, with roughly 255 online and 19 in person.? The GIS program enrolls 58 students, all of whom take courses online. In addition, students participate in immersive field study experiences around the country and the world.?
The Program Director is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Senior Lecturer.?The Program Director reports directly to the Associate Dean for Graduate & Professional Programs, who leads the Advanced Academic Programs and reports to the Dean of the Krieger School and consults with the Program Chair on academic matters.???
The Program?Director will have the following academic and administrative responsibilities:?
Academic Responsibilities?
Teaching 3 graduate courses per year, including preparation and time spent in the classroom (online or onsite), using best practices for teaching, engaging, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process, and responding to student questions?
Advising students?
Providing innovative leadership for curriculum design and new course development to ensure the growth and delivery of quality programs?
Other academic duties normally performed by full-time or regular part-time faculty, such as participating on committees, attending academic events, or contributing to other academic service? ?
Administrative Responsibilities?
Overseeing full-time and adjunct faculty hiring, development,?and evaluation; making personnel decisions in consultation with the Program Chair and Associate Dean or designee?
Managing a small program operations budget?
Conducting the program admissions processes, including reviewing and approving prospective students' admissions materials?
Coordinating with the Enrollment Services, Student Success, Instructional Resource Center, Faculty and Academic Affairs, and Marketing and Communications staff in program administrative matters?

The Program Director role is critical to maintaining the overall high quality of these programs.? The Program Director must be visionary, entrepreneurial, energetic, collaborative, and inclusive. They must have passion for education and its power to change lives, especially for part-time and non-residential students, combined with the business acumen necessary to lead a successful professional-education enterprise. Experience in the greater environmental or geographic fields in science and policy in either academia or the professional workplace is desired. A track record of building and managing successful onsite and online education programs, as well as skills in instructional design, content development, and instructional technology are important.?
Candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds are of particular interest.?

Minimum Qualifications:?
Terminal degree in a discipline related to the Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, or Geographic Information Systems, or in a related specialization, such as Environmental Chemistry, Ecology, Hydrology, Earth Sciences, or Geography??
5 years of higher education teaching experience??
The ability to teach a variety of courses in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, and/or Geographic Information Systems?
Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design?
Strong organizational skills?
The ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines?
Excellent oral and written communication skills?
Preferred Qualifications:?
6+ years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level?
3 to 5 years of related professional experience
Experience in cloud computing??
Experience managing a degree or certificate program?
