We are seeking a Manager of Arts in Health (Partnership Manager) who will report to and under the general direction of the Associate Dean for Innovation, Interdisciplinary Partnerships, and Community Initiatives with dotted lines to the Director of Peabody Preparatory as well as staff liaisons at Johns Hopkins Medicine. This full-time 12-month position is responsible for supporting existing and new Peabody Institute Arts in Health programs in Baltimore clinical and community contexts.
The Arts in Health Program Manager manages all musicians and dancers in Peabody's Arts in Health clinical programs at Johns Hopkins Medicine as well as Peabody Prescribe's Arts and Wellness community programs, overseeing application and selection processes, orientation and training, supervision, evaluation, and ongoing mentorship and professional development. Requiring onsite work at Peabody as well as Johns Hopkins Hospital and offsite work within the Baltimore area, the Manager is responsible for building relationships and programs within both clinical and community settings to advance Peabody's expanding Arts in Health initiatives and will navigate between the arenas of healthcare, community arts, and higher education.
The Peabody Institute & Johns Hopkins Medicine
Music programs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital are part of an extensive partnership between the Peabody Institute and Johns Hopkins Medicine that bring the healing power of music and dance to the hospital environment. The Peabody Institute and Johns Hopkins Medicine together have created site-specific programs in high-stress contexts, providing arts experiences to help reduce anxiety, alleviate pain, promote wellness, and improve patient and staff experiences.
Music programs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital offer musicians the opportunity to bring their artistry to the healthcare environment and develop the context-specific skillset needed to contribute to wellbeing and healing. Musicians are selected for their artistic excellence, stylistic breadth, flexibility in programming, and familiarity with and/or interest in healthcare culture. Drawn primarily from the Peabody Conservatory, other performers are members of the greater Johns Hopkins and Baltimore communities.
The Music for a While program aims to lift spirits and reduce stress for patients, visitors, and hospital staff, enhancing the environment of care at Johns Hopkins Medicine. Programs are short, informal, and accessible to all in public spaces of the hospital. The MFAW program is supported by the JHM Office of Service Excellence and Office of Well-Being, and was developed in collaboration with the Patient and Family Advisory Councils.
The Sound Rounds program began in Spring 2018 as a collaboration between the Peabody Institute and the JHH Patient and Family Advisory Councils. In pre-COVID times, a corps of professionally trained musicians from Peabody Conservatory provided musical services through scheduled visits, drop-in room visits, and impromptu "concerts" in hallways, waiting rooms, and family visiting rooms. This program has pivoted to virtual delivery over Zoom, and primarily serves staff at this time.
The Arts in Health Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital is a competitive, paid program that trains student leaders in the curation and execution of Arts in Health performances. Within Peabody, the Arts in Health Fellows serve as liaisons between LAUNCHPad's Community-Based Learning programs and the student body, actively working to demonstrate best practices and support meaningful opportunities for students to experience musical activity in a clinical setting. At the hospital, the Arts in Health Fellows join an interdisciplinary team of artists and administrators supporting the development and execution of Arts in Health programming at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
All musicians are required to participate in on-boarding activities at Johns Hopkins Hospital (health screening, background check, orientation, and training), receive context-specific training, and adhere to all patient safety and occupational health procedures and policies. Peabody provides musicians with artistic support and regular supervision (including consultation with creative arts therapists), and ongoing professional development.
Arts in Health programs at Peabody are part of a larger portfolio of Performing Arts & Health initiatives, which include the Johns Hopkins Clinic for Performing Artists at the Peabody Institute as well as peak performance and injury prevention education. Holistic well-being for performing artists is fundamental to the design and delivery of Peabody's Arts in Health programs.
