Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV) supports the commercialization of university technology through (a) technology licensing, (b) the development of corporate research collaborations and (c) venture creation. JHTV serves as a business advisor to investigators at all nine schools of the university whose research has commercial potential and provides a set of specific resources to aid them in applying world-class science to the market in industries ranging from biotech to industrial manufacturing and energy.

JHTV is seeking a Data Visualization Specialist who will support the office through organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data to improve internal and external reporting and to provide business insights in support of office strategy and leadership decision-making. The Data Visualization Specialist will be responsible for responding to requests from all areas of JHTV (Technology Transfer, Business Development, Finance, and Fast Forward) to prepare annual and quarterly reports, benchmarking studies, designing visual displays of information, and other reporting as needed.
The Data Visualization Specialist will report to and work closely with the JHTV Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives to achieve the team's mission of maximizing the impact of Johns Hopkins University's research excellence by facilitating the translation and commercialization of discoveries into accessible technologies, products and services that benefit society
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Collects, refines and manages data from internal and external information systems, surveys and data stewards.
- Conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data both independently and on teams.
- Communicates findings in written, graphical and oral forms.
- Works with stakeholders to understand their information needs and tailor the analyses to address those needs.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Bachelor's Degree in a field that requires significant work in research and statistical methods (social science, computer science, business, statistics, etc.).
- One (1) year of related experience with data visualization required.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
* Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident required due to Federal Export Controls.
- Demonstrated aptitude for data analysis and detailed reporting including the use of descriptive and analytical statistics.
- Willingness and desire to learn new techniques and tools as needed.
- Strong technical skills and programming experience with statistical packages (e.g., SPSS), experience writing queries and using business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Business Objects); high level of skill with MS Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and consistent analyses.
- Excellent organization and documentation skills; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with others.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal skills; discretion to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and/or personal information.
- Ability to document areas of concern in data sets, such as missing/inconsistent data, that could pose a problem for researchers attempting to use the data.
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
- Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
- Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
