Johns Hopkins offers a robust recreation program, to include group fitness classes, personal training, outdoor experiential education, aquatic activities, sport clubs, and intramural sports. In a typical year, our programs and facilities receive approximately 250,000 visits from students, staff, and faculty. The Department of Recreation is the largest employer of students on campus, and additionally provides robust student leadership development opportunities.  In 2021, Hopkins Athletics and Recreation completed a $27 million-dollar renovation and expansion of the Ralph S. O'Connor Center for Recreation and Well-Being. Built as a cross-collaborative campus destination, the facility features all new state-of-the-art equipment for strength and cardiovascular training, expanded group fitness offerings, and mindfulness and meditation programming. The focus is on fostering holistic student health, a community of care, and an increased emphasis on self-care and well-being.

 

The Department of Athletics and Recreation seeks an innovative and forward-thinking leader to assume the role of Associate Athletic Director/Director of Recreation Services. Hopkins encourages inquiries from candidates who value professional and personal development and will actively contribute to a culture of inclusiveness within both the department and University setting.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Direct the strategic planning process for Recreation Services. Develop and promote a shared vision that drives departmental and institutional priorities and the on-going organization of work. Create and implement short-term and long-term plans consistent with the strategic plan of the department to ensure mission effectiveness.
  • Responsible for the overall management, administration, and marketing of campus wide recreation services, facilities, and programs.  
  • Direct responsibility for offering diverse and expansive Recreation programs including but not limited to: fitness class scheduling, intramural contests, sports club and experiential education activities, and internal and external special events.
  • Promote a community of belonging and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by expanding program offerings to increase student and staff engagement.
  • Plan, manage, and evaluate the annual operating budget which includes revenue generation and forecasting, expense management and analysis, and establishing pricing and fees for services.
  • Responsible for the establishment and review of operational and personnel policies/procedures consistent with University policies, industry best practices, and state and federal laws.
  • Provides departmental leadership in establishing a culture of excellence that minimizes risk and enhances quality and safety of programs. Responsible and accountable for sustaining an inclusive environment throughout the organization and programs.
  • Spearhead collaborative partnerships with other campus colleagues/departments that enhance collective health and well-being efforts. 
  • Design and implement the processes and structures needed to operate a large-scale recreation program efficiently, nimbly, and cost-effectively.
  • The Associate Athletic Director serves as a member of the department's administrative leadership team.  
  • Pursue and implement additional revenue generating opportunities that help financially support recreation programs.
  • Oversight of all Recreation Services marketing endeavors and branding initiatives that have significant impact within the entire campus community, specifically the student body. 
  • Must facilitate cost-effective operations relating to management of safety/liability concerns, security of facilities, etc.
  • Oversee a staff of eight professionals, including five direct reports.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Advanced Degree preferred.
  • Four to six years of relevant work experience in collegiate athletic and/or campus recreation departments or comparatively complex organizations.
  • Exceptional ability to work in a networked way, emphasizing collaboration in a complex environment.
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, interpersonal and analytical skills in a fast-paced environment with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans and programs. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously along difficult timelines.
  • Previous supervisory experience required. Oversight of student employees preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise judgment and discretion.
  • Commitment to making an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability and enthusiasm for mentoring and developing subordinate staff.
  • Keen attention to detail.

Key Relationships:

  • The Associate Athletic Director - Recreation Services is directly supervised by the Deputy Director of Athletics and Recreation.
  • This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.

 

Physical Effort/Environment:

  • General office, athletic facility, and campus environment.
  • The position will require work outside and in inclement weather.
  • Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary. 
  • Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and occasional lifting is required.
  • Computer usage involving repetitive and/wrist motion is required. The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year with those dates determined by a supervisor.

 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Operates on turf, grass, gymnasium, and training rooms.
  • General open office and campus environment.
  • Position involves sitting, movement, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds in coaching and training situations.
  • Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work is required.
