The Department of Surgery, Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is seeking a highly qualified Cardiac Surgeon to serve as the Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. The ideal candidate will assume a prominent leadership role and must have a broad experience in all aspects of transplantation, the surgical care of advanced heart failure patients, and general adult cardiac surgery with a requisite track record of exemplary clinical results. The applicant will divide their time between heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and adult cardiac surgery. This role includes the responsibility of teaching integrated six-year (I-6) and traditional cardiothoracic trainees, expanding the research and scholarly activities to achieve national and international recognition while advancing the field. The University of Maryland is a world-renowned research institution that provides a superb academic foundation for basic, clinical, and translational research. Robust opportunities exist to enhance the Division's existing research portfolio through collaboration with an array of researchers within the Department of Surgery and across the University.
About the Division: The Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine includes 14 faculty providing cardiac surgery services at four locations and is the market leader in cardiac surgical care in the State of Maryland, with over 2000 major cardiac cases performed/year. The Division sponsors a mature integrated 6-year Cardiothoracic Training program. The Division's Lung Healing Unit supported 250 patients on ECMO in 2020. The Division is home to several NIH-funded surgeon-scientists, has a Clinical Research Unit with over 40 prospectively enrolling clinical trials, and is a site for the NHLBI-sponsored Cardiothoracic Surgical Trials Network.
