The Mental Health Department seeks a Research Program Assistant  and the primary duties of this position will be performed in the State of Michigan in participating school systems. Responsible for organizing and completing a variety of school-based and follow-up assessments with students, teachers, and adults currently enrolled in NIH/IES research projects. School-based assessments include, but are not limited to, computerized classroom observations, teacher self-reports of their well-being, beliefs, and practices, and teacher reports of students' emotional, academic, and behavioral functioning, within participating Michigan public school systems. Follow-up assessments include computerized diagnostic and behavioral interviews of adults enrolled in a long-term follow-up study of intervention efficacy. Also responsible for the recruitment of students and obtaining parental consent for participation. Some evenings and weekends required during the consent gathering and assessment process.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collecting data using computerized interviewing materials designed to assess a broad range of tailored and comprehensive classroom behaviors.
  • Multiple tasks include conducting classroom observations, working closely with teachers and school administrators around scheduling the observations, verifying and logging confidential data into a centralized database, communicating with the students and teachers around the assessments.
  • Duties also include reviewing data for accuracy and completeness, generating access reports, etc.
  • Candidate will attend extensive trainings to learn how to work independently to establish contact with teachers and families, build rapport, and conduct unbiased computerized observations and follow-up assessments within the school. 
  • Candidates must successfully pass training to continue with employment. Candidate will also meet regularly with research team as part of weekly supervision meetings. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for traveling to the selected schools within the participating school systems to gather scheduling information, conduct the classroom observations, and teacher/student assessments.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Some related experience.

 

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula:

 

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job. *

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.A./B.S. in Psychology, Mental Health, Social Work, Public Health, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with confidential data &/or conducting student assessments within a school setting preferred but not required.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Must have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be willing & able to travel in and around schools in Michigan &/or other participating school systems as needed.
  • Proficiency with laptops, tablets, computers, and MS Office applications.
  • Must clear state and federal criminal background and finger-printing checks.

Starting Salary Range: $15.00 - $16.93/hr (commensurate with experience)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
