The Department of Medicine, Hospitalist seeks a Research Assistant to assist with completing a systematic review on the cost and quality of care provided in POHs. As we have screened over 6,000 articles, there is significant analysis, compilation, and critique required. It is expected that the Research Assistant will assist with and help direct many of these tasks to help solider the project towards completion.

It is widely acknowledged that care delivery markets –hospital and ambulatory – are consolidated, with many functioning as regional oligopolies or even monopolies in some markets. There are few potentials for market entry given entry costs in the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars. Physician-owned hospitals represent a small hospital market segment that has the potential for expansion, introducing greater competition. POHs are split evenly between community and focused-factory hospitals in cardiac, orthopedic, and general surgery care, dispersed primarily in Southwest and Midwest markets. Their history has long been controversial due to issues of patient selection, payment policy, and operational scope, and were finally subject to a statutory ban on expansion and participation in the Medicare program as part of the Affordable Care Act. Healthcare services research in this space is conflicting and has lacked academic impartiality, with many researchers funded by the hospital industry.

It is expected that this project will be the anchoring research in this space for years to come.
